Press Release: Tour Debut for NEW 2009 ProV1
NEW 2009 PRO V1 GOLF BALLS MAKE AN INSTANT IMPRESSION DURING TOUR DEBUT
Next generation Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls on show at the US PGA Tour season opener
The Mercedes-Benz Championship in Hawaii last week not only signalled the start of the 2009 US PGA Tour season, but also the Tour introduction of the new 2009 Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls. Of the 20 players that teed it up with a Titleist at Kapalua's Plantation Course, 10 of them relied upon the new Pro V1 or Pro V1x for the first time in PGA Tour competition. The new 2009 Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls are engineered for longer distance and greater durability, and will be available in golf shops from March.
Among the players trusting the new golf balls was Titleist Brand Ambassador Davis Love III (New Pro V1x). Love continued his momentum from winning the final PGA Tour event of 2008, and earning a lifetime exemption on the PGA Tour, by closing with a 6-under par 67 to finish in a tie for 2nd place at 18-under. Furthermore, J.B. Holmes played the New Pro V1x for the first time in competition and led the field in Driving Distance with an average of 297.4 yards per drive. Adam Scott, Camilo Villegas and Chez Reavie were amongst the other players who put the new 2009 Pro V1 in play for the first time.
The tournament was won in wire-to-wire fashion by Australian Geoff Ogilvy (Pro V1 '07), who posted a closing round 5-under 68 to finish six shots ahead of the field. The 2006 U.S. Open champion took the lead on the 14th hole in the opening round and remained at the top of the leaderboard throughout the rest of the tournament to record his fifth PGA Tour victory, and move up to 6th place in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Titleist was the most played golf ball at the limited-field event with 61%, more than three times the nearest competitor. Titleist also swept the major golf club equipment categories, as the choice of more players in drivers (10-Tied 1st), fairway metals (17), iron sets (11), wedges (36) and putters (13).
On the European Tour, Denmark's Anders Hansen (Pro V1x ‘07) birdied the final hole
to capture the Joburg Open title. Hansen's final round 5-under 66 gave him a 15-under 269 total, one better than playing partner Andrew McLardy (Pro V1x ‘05) of South Africa. McLardy shared the overnight lead with Scotland's David Drysdale (Pro V1x ‘07), who finished solo third at 13-under 271 to complete a Titleist Pro V1x 1-2-3 finish.
The 2009 US PGA Tour starts just as it ended in 2008, with a victory for the Pro V1 to prove once again that the game’s elite continue to opt for the matchless performance of Titleist; a trend that looks set to continue following the successful debut performance on Tour of the new 2009 Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls.
