Press Release: Watney trusts Titleist from tee to green to take WGC title
WATNEY TRUSTS TITLEIST FROM TEE TO GREEN TO TAKE WGC TITLE
Titleist Brand Ambassador Nick Watney claims the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral to give the #1 Ball in Golf its second WGC victory in three weeks
Following the example set by fellow Pro V1x loyalist Luke Donald a fortnight ago when he claimed his first WGC title, Titleist Brand Ambassador Nick Watney fired a final round 5-under par 67 to win the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral. Watney birdied the 72nd hole to claim a two shot victory in Florida and register his third PGA Tour victory. Continuing his stunning start to the 2011 season, Watney’s first victory follows three consecutive top-6 finishes and elevates him to #1 in the PGA Tour scoring average and #2 in the FedEx Cup points, behind fellow Pro V1x loyalist Mark Wilson.
Trusting Titleist equipment from tee-to-green in Florida, Watney’s winning equipment included the Pro V1x golf ball, 910D3 driver, 910F fairway, 910H hybrid, AP2 irons, Vokey Design wedges and Scotty Cameron Tour 350 putter. The precision and playability of Titleist equipment helped Watney finish on top of one of the strongest fields of the season at Doral, with his set custom built to tame the TPC Blue Monster. Having his irons bent one degree weaker than standard and adding an AP2 #3 iron to his set, in place of a 19° 910F, Watney played the required shots into each hole at Doral, making 12 birdies and one eagle over the final 36 holes.
Watney was joined at the top of the leaderboard by a host of Titleist golf ball loyalists including Anders Hanson (Pro V1x) who finished tied-3rd and Titleist Brand Ambassadors Adam Scott (New Pro V1), Rickie Fowler (Pro V1x) and Rory McIlroy (Pro V1x) who finished tied-6, tied-8 and tied-10 respectively. Of the 14 players who finished among the top-10 and ties in Florida, 10 relied upon the legendary feel and control of Titleist for their success. Titleist was the overwhelming golf ball of choice at the WGC-Cadillac Championship with 37 players putting their trust in the #1 ball in golf, more than three times the nearest competitor with 12. The strength of Titleist’s product range also led to the brand topping the counts for iron sets, sand, lob and approach wedges, and putters respectively.
On the PGA Tour, Titleist Pro V1x loyalist Michael Bradley claimed the Puerto Rico Classic ahead of an all-Titleist top-3, beating Titleist Brand Ambassador Troy Matteson (Pro V1) at the first play-off hole. Completing the top-3 was Titleist Brand Ambassador Hunter Haas, who finished alone in third, two shots back from the play-off. Bradley’s victory continues Titleist’s impressive win count on the 2011 PGA Tour with 10 of the first 12 events being won by a player teeing up the legendary Pro V1 or Pro V1x, improving Titleist’s 2011 worldwide golf ball win count to 22, compared to 6 for the nearest competitor.
A first World Golf Championship victory for Titleist Brand Ambassador Nick Watney, coupled with a further victory for a Titleist golf ball loyalist on the PGA Tour, continues to prove that the world’s best players opt for the matchless performance of Titleist for their success.
