I have played the PROV1X for years..........When I take these balls out of play I put the best in my practice tube for chipping and pitching practice.....WHY?????

I want to practice these delicate shots with the ball I play with during a round to create confidence in check and roll dynamics around the green.

    What is your experience???

David A - likewise, I practice with the ball I play:  this year - Pro V1x.  Why practice short game with a ball other than the one you play with?

I switched to Pro V1x, not because I have excessive backspin, but because the short game spin is similar to a Pro V1 (and better than the ball I was using) and, it has a higher long game flight, which I need.

I always use  Titleist balls for practice on my chipping and pitching, for the same reason  you use them for David. The one piece of equipment that stays the same,on every shot.So why not practice with the best ball in golf..Plus you get a much better feel for how the ball is responding, when practicing your shots.around a green. No sense in playing a smorgasbord of golf balls to practice with you end up with different results with the same swing.

  4. Our club uses titleist NXT as our practice balls, as a ProV1 ball player I use them in my shag bag, mostly used after a few holes, so that I can have predictable outcomes in my short game...definitely a different feel and action!

Glad to hear others do the same!

I too use old Prov1s that been retired from play due to scuffs or whatever reason. I also use older Prov1s I occasionally find on course.

Practice ...................Like you have never won

    Play...........................Like you have never lost!

Same for me. I always practice with the ball I actually play with.

I practice these shots just before I play and I use the ball I intend to start with that day>

    David,

I do the exact same thing. The Meijer in town also has some of the ProV1x marked "PRACTICE" at a discounted price, so I'll use those for chipping, pitching, and putting practice. I don't even like to putt with a different ball if I can help it.

The times I have practice with different balls (premium or otherwise), they do react slightly differently. I am not a scratch golfer by any means (handicap usually fluctuates between 9-12), but I will say that mentally it does make a difference to know exactly how my ball will react because I can draw on what I've seen in practice.

    I'll use a ProV1 or ProV1x I mark with a large letter P.

That way after pre-round warmup I don't mix the nicked up balls with the gamers.   Usually have two sleeves a year just for this type of practice.

I use the same balls that I play (Pro V1)  to practice with. Balls that I have played a few rounds with make their way into my shag bag and periodically I weed out the older balls in my shag bag.

I do the same. I buy a bunch of logo overruns every couple of years and keep em in the shag bag

Our club provides ProV1X practice balls for the chipping/pitching areas and will continue to do this as long as no body starts putting them in their bag to play. The word PRACTICE is stamped on the balls but as for as I can tell there is no difference between them and the ones you play.

Same ball I play with.  Prov1s.  I want the same feel.

David, I agree, why wouldn't you practice your chipping & putting with the ball you play with. I have a shag bag full of prov1x's that travel with me rite along with my full bag of titleist clubs. Besides most of your range balls at clubs are restricted flight balls & are as hard as rocks!!

I put all of my scuffed Pro V1s in my shag bag and keep it in the trunk of my car. Touch, feel and spin are all really important for me to practice, and it's just not the same with the hard practice balls at my course.

You're on it!  I use "rejected" (scuffed, chipped etc) Pro V1's to practice chipping and pitching.  If you practice with Range balls you won't get the full benefit unless you play with them...

i got rid of the potpurri of golf balls in my shag bag and put used prov1x balls in place. same great ball i use on the course

In practice I use the golf balls from previous rounds of golf played. I think it is very important to practice with the same balls that you will use on the course during play. This gives you the feel and performance that can be expected during play. You want to understand how the ball will react to each shot and if you are not using the ball that you intend to play with you will not get that feel during practice.

I agree with Gabe B's comments. He hits the nail on the head with his answer.

When one of my game Titleist is nicked or otherwise taken out of play, it becomes a short game practice ball.

I always practice with the same ball I play.  I have a shag bag of gamed ProV1Xs that I use for chipping and bunker practice.  I have found it makes a huge difference!

I only ever hit Pro V1's, on the course or practicing. Why practice with anything other than what you play with?

I'm with you Dave.  I practice with Pro V's.  When mine scuff they go into the shag bag and then they get used for chipping practice.

Dave, I'm with you. I want to ensure that when I practice I get the same feel as when I play - PRACTICE LIKE YOU PLAY. In an affordability stand point, I try to stick to balls that have already been used from previous practice or rounds. This allows me to see instance feedback from the ball I love to play - ProV1X. Thanks for the post Dave!

Probably don't do quite enough chipping and pitching, but I just use worn out balls from a round.  This way I am playing with the same ball.  If they are beat up too bad, I give them away or toss them.

Great thread! Yes, I also use my used ProV1 balls for practice. At a home practice green, I use a new sleeve of ProV1. I've only started doing this for about 3-4 years. I've been practicing with the wrong balls prior- big difference!

I joined a club this year and for the 1st time started really practicing chipping on a real green. I'm talking about actual devoted sessions - not just a few chips before a round. Before that I only practiced in the backyard at home with old junky balls. Unfortunately the club uses the same range balls on the chipping green so I have been bringing my old used ProV's to practice with.

I know the practice on a real green using "real" balls my touch is improved 100%!!!

I retire my used Pro V1x's and use them for practicing my short game. I believe this is the only way to build consistency on the course. Using different balls with varying spin rates leaves you guessing all of the time. This is why I also use the same ball each time I play.

Like the majority, same ball that I will use in play, only it is used from the shag bag.
