PRODUCT SPECIALIST

RODDY SPENCE

Area: Scotland - Border, Lothian, Fife, Tayside, Grampian, Northumberland

What do you enjoy most about your role as a Titleist Product Specialist? Being able to help a Golfer with their game, and often seeing immediate results from something as simple as a change in SureFit Hosel setting, or change in shaft.

What’s the biggest performance gain you’ve seen during a fitting? I often get asked to help golfers find 20 more yards from their driver. One fit I carried out in Inverness saw one Golfer pick up 24 yards on average over his old driver, simply by giving him more loft and a lighter, shaft.

What’s your favourite part of the bag to fit a consumer for? Every part of the bag brings it's own enjoyment in one way or another, but if I had to choose one, it would be wedges. I often find this can be the quickest way to help a golfer take shots off their scores. Finding the right bounce/grind can often be intimidating to some people, but once you get the right wedge in their hand the results speak for themselves.

What was the first Titleist club you fit a consumer for? The first Titleist Golf club I ever fitted was a 910 D2. This was my introduction to the SureFit Hosel system and I remember being blown away by how effective it was.

What’s your golf story? How did you first get in to golf? I grew up as the youngest of four very competitive boys. All of my brothers were really keen and talented golfers, who spent all of their time at the Golf Course, and all I ever wanted to do was be able to hit it as far, or as high, or spin the ball as much as they could. My eldest brother is a PGA Pro in Australia, so any time he's back home, it always gets the competitive side of me going again!

What’s your favourite course to play? I'm lucky enough to live and play my golf in St Andrews, so for me it has to be the Old Course. Having played it countless times, you would think that the novelty of the first tee would wear off, but it never does. It also suits my snap hook quite nicely!!

What’s your favourite Titleist memory? When I got my first ever Titleist Golf Club. A Scotty Cameron Pro Platinum Newport Mid Slant - I still have it to this day.

If you weren’t a Titleist Product Specialist, what would you be doing? I have a degree in Criminology, and a career in the Police had been an idea I'd thought about through School as I knew I'd never be good enough to do what I really wanted to do (a Pro Golfer). Now that I'm in the job I am, I'm delighted I didn't go down the Police route!

Pro V1 or Pro V1? Pro V1 I am the definition of the knuckle ball. Give me as high launch and spin as possible please!

Do you prefer to play in rain or wind? Wind. Playing Golf where I do, I'm not sure I've ever played in flat calm conditions?

Parkland or Links golf? Links. It definitely makes you think more about every shot.

Drive for Show or Putt for Dough? and explain

Putt for Dough. When I get the putter going, I think I can hole everything. Just ask David Guthrie..
