I'll be in Pittsburgh for the next 9-10 months finishing my master's. What are your favorite courses in the area?

I've played Montour Heights a couple of times -- great golf course all the way around.

Also played Blackhawk in Beaver Falls -- good course for the money. Pretty basic public course, but is always in really good condition.

What else? Any "can't miss" courses I need to play?

Obviously Oakmont but I was lucky enough to get on through a friend.

Oakmont is definitely on the list...hopefully I'll be able to get an invite at some point. I've been lucky enough to get an invite to Montour Heights, which was nice.

Olde Stonewall is a must play. Dramatic elevation changes with River/creek views. Oh, and don't forget the castle for a clubhouse and the suit of armor inside. I believe it is #1 or 2 in courses you can play in PA. Great track. Highly recommended!

Some of my favorite courses are Quicksilver in Midway and Hickory Heights in Bridgeville. Grand View is cool because it loops around a mountain but has a lot of blind tee shots and you really have to hit your targets. If you do not mind driving Nemacolin Woodland Resort has awesome courses. I would start with Mystic Rock if you make it down that way

Congratulations on working on your degree. Best of luck. I lived in Pittsburgh for 10 years (I went to Pitt). I used to play a lot of golf at Butler's Creekside and Lakeside courses. Reasonably priced, courses were in good condition.

Thanks! I like how affordable golf is in the area. Some courses even give student rates, which is nice!

Try Totteridge in Greensburg, one of my favorite courses. Great layout with some dramatic elevation changes.
