This is an ongoing debate with my fourball...what would be better? Having Spieth's magical putting or Dustin Johnson's insane length?

Personally, I'll happily sacrifice length to be able to drain putts more often but, as one of my group notes, if you're driving the ball stupidly long then you'll be able to hit them close as you're almost always approaching with a short iron/wedge taking the reliance away from draining long putts.

I'd still prefer putting over length! What do you think?

As a long driver but poor putter myself, playing in a four ball or scramble with someone who is able to make it drop in 1 is definitely key to a good score.

It’s better to have to club up for every approach, rather than missing a putt on every hole.

You can recover from a bad approach shot and still make par/birdie but you can't recover from a missed putt...
  4. I'd go for length on the basis that everyone can learn to putt better. Only a tiny minority have the innate physical ability to hit it as long as DJ.

I am not a long hitter, but if I was, the only thing that would scare me is a great putter. I am never out of a hole because I firmly believe I can knock it from anywhere. It does put pressure on my short game, but I don't have any choice. For the pros, they all hit it far, putting is what separates the winner from everyone else each week.

I would only add the comment that comparing DJ to Jordan is not a "fair" comparison. Jordan has been at or near the top in terms of Approach Shots to the Green ... his proximity to the hole has separated him from the others on a more consistent basis. It's easier to sink 10 foot putts than it is 20 foot putts, etc.

Agreed, I was more using them to illustrate putting vs driving (they're both perfect examples of being awesome at putting - Spieth - and driving - DJ).

Interestingly enough, in proximity to the hole Spieth ranks 4th with 33' 2" to the hole and DJ at 18th with 34' 1" - just shows at the level what a difference an inch makes in putting!

What, like Jordan doesn't hit the ball far ?

    I guess after this weekend, it's official...DJ's length trumps Spieth's putting :-)

Yeah, but Speith admitted that he played the hole wrong. He should have gone for it with driver. He hits it long enough to carry.

Its all about getting the ball in the hole, so putting every time!
