We're back with more answers to your golf ball fitting questions and this latest question comes from Greg P. in Illinois…

Q: What influence does compression have nowadays on golf ball performance?

A: This is a great question from Greg, and it's a question we get from golfers all the time. It's really important to understand what exactly compression is. Compression is just a measure of the relative softness of the golf ball. In terms of performance, it's really just one lever that our R&D team will use to create the total performance of the golf ball. There's no single aspect of the golf ball's construction that will dictate its performance, so, a low-compression (or high compression) golf ball on its own is not going to be a better performing golf ball. It's all the components of the golf ball working together to create that performance.

If you have a feel preference for a softer feeling golf ball, you may prefer to play a lower compression golf ball, but it's important to understand that that doesn't necessarily translate over into better performance.

Thanks, Mike. Although at the low end of average driver speed (87-90) I have yet to find a softer ball that scores better for me than a Pro-V1x. A timely fitting question to answer is does a lower compression ball really make a difference in colder weather? My own non-scientific tests have yet to prove that the distance gap changes, even if I lose overall distance in the 40's over the 80's. It appears it is the number of layers of clothing that make more difference than the ball compression when playing in lower temperatures. Any data on the balls based on the ambient temperature?

I have a club head speed of about 85. I play over 300 rounds a year and am a 9 handicapper. I am 75 years old. I have chosen the Pro V1, because it the best performing ball for me. This is under any weather conditions. I have tried lower compression balls and felt like I hit mush and got no distance. My Pro V1 gives about the same distance more consistently. This is why I only use the Pro V1.
