AP1 716 Irons - Adjustment

SWesson

Hi,

We bought my son a set of AP1 716 irons 2 years ago and in the intervening years he has grown somewhat.!

On a recent test it seems he may need the irons adjusted anything up to 4 degrees upright.

Can the irons be adjusted / bent ?!? (to date I have received conflicting advice!)

Thank you,

Shane

Anything more than 2 degrees will likely crack the hosel finish.
Sounds like you should work with a fitter for shaft extensions or longer shafts. Holding the shaft more upright as it gets shorter relative to his height will also create swing changes he should avoid.

Titleist's Custom Options Guide revised January 2016 indicated the 716 AP1 can be bent upright up to 4 degrees but can only be bent flat up to 2 degrees- these parameters also apply to the 718 AP1- in the 718 iron line only the CB and MB models are limited to 2 degrees upright- same 2 degree flat lie adjustment limitation.

I completely agree with Don O. If he is serious and committed to improve, you may want to seek out a Titleist fitter. It may be time for new shafts or a new set of 718 irons (easy for me to suggest spending your money). Good luck and have fun.

I've had multiple versions of the MB irons and all of them have been bent 3 degrees up. Titleist will only do 2 up (for warranty), so I have to them bent again when they arrive. I've never had a hosel crack yet.

Hi, When we list a lie angle of 4° up or 2° flat, we use 2° upright heads and only bend an additional 2°. We would not recommend trying to bend those irons 4° upright. 4° upright in 2 years is quite a big change. We agree with Don, you may want to seek out a good Titleist fitter to take a look before you try to bend these.

Cathi, am I to understand the AP1 is manufactured/cast 2 degree upright in addition to the standard lie, thus, allowing for an additional bending of 2 degrees upright and does this apply to the other iron models with the exception of the CB and MB models. The Custom Options Brochure would lead one to believe that the standard lie club head can be bent up to 4 degrees upright- perhaps this could be clarified in future Brochure revisions/editions. Thanks for your many useful comments and attention to many important issues.

Hi Joseph, The AP1 as well as AP2 and T-MB heads are built at std lie as well as 2° upright so we only bend the iron 2 degrees. We don't encourage players to have their heads bent outside of our facility (it voids the Warranty) so we provide the specifications that we will build for custom orders.

Cathi, are all 2 degree upright custom orders filled from the 2 degree upright build or are standard heads bent depending upon the availability of the upright built head? Thanks.

I just learned something new, Cathi. Thanks for the information. Once again, Titleist is at the top of their game and an industry leader. I bet the others don't offer that custom option.

Tom, the 2 degree upright additional build is a great option that other manufacturers don't seem to offer- just another example of Titleist's great effort to meet the needs of their customers.
