I know I will probably have to weaken the AP3's and strengthen the AP2's to allow for the gapping but it's my wedges that I'm worried about.

Just bought the 718 Ap2, love the looks and feel. Titleist Thursday got fit into Ap2 PW-7 and feels like butter. Also fit me into the Ap1 5 & 6 iron, oh my, they feel horrible, I have played 6 rounds with them and every one of them feels like I hit the ball with a two by four, clunkers. I came from ap2’s and miz mp64 for years.

Going to turn around a sell them soon and order all ap2’s 5-pw, best feeling ap2’s I have hit. I don’t want to wait for the 720’s, going to be hard to beat the 718’s with looks and feel and going through the turf is amazing.

RE: AP3/AP2 Combo Gapping

I was playing the AP2/AP3 combo set as you can see from my pervious post. I ended up going back to all AP2 irons. My ball striking went way down, I have always struggled with larger clubs heads and wider soles. I thought it was just in my head but after a few weeks of playing the AP3 I can not get a good strike which means I am not getting the full distance that I should. With lofts being 3 degrees more I should be seeing more distance with the AP3, but I don't see any distance gains from my AP2s. I am going back to what works for me.

RE: AP3/AP2 Combo Gapping

If I go for a combo set I may have to go for
5 & 6 AP3 weakened 1 deg AP2 7 to PW 1 deg stronger. I would rather go AP3 5 to 7 AP2 8 to PW but then I would have to have the AP2’s 2 deg stronger, not sure about
that. I have an iron fitting at St Ives fitting centre soon so hopefully they will help.
I could end up with a complete set of AP3’s.

RE: AP3/AP2 Combo Gapping

I play a mixed set of AP2s and AP3s. I have the same problem. And now that we are back into posting season, I have to come up with a solution, since I had been using both 7 irons. The AP3 is 31 degrees and the AP2 is 34 degrees and the distance gap between the two 7 irons is about 10 yards on average. Frankly I love the way I hit my AP2 7i, but also love the extra distance with the AP3 7i. I dumped my 4i in order to play both 7 irons, but now I really want it back in the bag full time, as my hybrid distance has really increased as the temperatures have risen.

I don't think the XP90s I have in the AP2s are strong enough for my swing anymore. At the time I was fitted, maybe they were, but my swing is far better now. (I was an 11 at the time, now a 5-6 index.) So, I am trying to find a heavier shaft that will help get me a few extra yards with my AP2s, yet am concerned about changing swingweight. I also plan to strengthen them at least a degree. Maybe 2. I really don't want to weaken my AP3s at all. (BTW, they have AMT blacks in them.) If I can get 5-7 extra yards out of my 7i and 8i AP2s, I think I can remove the AP3 7 iron without too big a gap, and get my 4i back in the bag, which I hit pretty well most of the time.

RE: AP3/AP2 Combo Gapping

I am currently considering a 4-6 AP3 and 7-PW AP2 setup. I’m curious if anyone knows if adjusting the loft impacts the lie. Obviously the bounce is impacted but if I just want the stock lies can I simply adjust loft and maintain the correct lies? Because I was thinking of having the lofts weakened by 2 degrees he would not be able to adjust them while I was being fitted only the lie. The lofts would obviously be done afterwards.

RE: AP3/AP2 Combo Gapping

My lie angles are 2 flat and my lofts are all adjusted to where I want them. I’m interested to know what the lie of your irons are, as I was told by Titleist fitter that as the lie for me would be 2 degrees flat then the lofts can’t be altered. I can understand it if the lie is standard but I didn’t ask why, I just excepted what he said.

RE: AP3/AP2 Combo Gapping

I have a split set of AP2's and 3's.
4-6 AP3's and 7-W AP2's
When I was fitted by Titleist, the suggestion was to strenghten the AP2's by 2 deg and weaken the AP3's by 1 deg.
My wedges are 60, 56, and 50.
The set up works for me. Alot of people ask about the bounce when bending the irons, but personally, I have not noticed much of a difference. Maybe a scratch player would, but I don't, and I play to a 9.

RE: AP3/AP2 Combo Gapping

I play a combo set. AP3 5-7 iron the 6 iron and 7 iron are bent one weak. AP2 8-PW all bent 1 strong. I have a 5 degree gap between by AP3 7 iron and AP2 8 iron, but I am able to take off and work the ball up or down with the AP3 7 iron so I don't mind so far.

For the wedges, my PW is 45 and I have my 50 bent to 48. The number loft does not matter to me as I am trying to fill a gap. I hit my PW 128 carry and my 50 was only going 110, I wanted my 50 to go at least 115 because I can hit my PW 115 to 128. The 54 and 58 stayed the same.

I just started trying this setup this year and golf is just getting started here in Michigan so I have not spent much time with this combo. If I don't like the 7 iron AP3, I will put the in the AP2 7 iron back in and bend strong and then all my lofts will be 4 degree gaps.

RE: AP3/AP2 Combo Gapping

Hasn’t anyone got an AP3/AP2 combo set ?
