I may be 100% wrong on this, but I've always assumed each number came from an identical mold set, so each #1, for example, would be identical in all respects to another #1 from the same box. Titleist quality control seems so good, I doubt it hardly matters at all. And I'm probably wrong about the numbering, lol

So what do you do if you have to play a provisional? Get a pen out and mark it differently to the first ball? That's a hassle!

I always add an identifier too. This isn't to help me identify my ball from my playing partners, it's so that I have different numbered balls for provisional shots etc. I'd rather not have to empty 3 sleeves into my bag to ensure I have a sufficient range of numbers. Or reorganise a box of balls to ensure that each sleeve has different numbers. That's all!

Hey 1a4b381a6b,

I used to buy a box or boxes for my supply.

It is easy to take a box, empty the sleeves.

Mark each balls (I like three dots) ...I like to mark them all at once.

place them back in each sleeve with mix numbers

1, 2, 3
2, 3, 4
3, 4, 1
4, 1, 2

You can now take a sleeve at a time and never have the same number during each round.

Most of the guys i play with don't play the same Titleist ball so it is not a problem for me. We all use a different color Sharpie in case we play the same ball.

That is what I do to a box of balls. I pre mark each ball and put 1's, 2's & 3's in three sleeves and the 4's are save for practicing chipping and putting.

It's perfectly deliberate. If, for example you play regularly with 4 people who all use ProV1x you agree to play a certain number, then your balls are easily identified.

A box of 1 dozen has 4 sleeves and each sleeve has a different number ball in it 1-4 that should het you different numbers. I personally play certain numbers but I order them that way. #3 & #66.

Indeed this would make playing a provisional easier. However I just mix 2/3 sleeves in my bag pocket. And once in a while I have to restock.

You could also personalize your balls and get the numbers you want!

I have to disagree with you, as I prefer to play only #1's, hence each sleeve of golf balls contains one number....Make it simple for everyone to understand.

Its all about consistency. If I was to say one thing about a Titleist Ball, it would be consistent performance, as expected, over and over again.

On a technical basis, it would be much more difficult to package 1-2-3-4 in a sleeve, as opposed to filling a series of sleeves all number 3, then feeding the full sleeves into a box. Of course, there are many others that do want all one number and will buy 4 boxes at a time like that. ...Mine is 50.

It's so the guys you play against can sneak another ball in play when they can't find the first one. :) Most of us add some personal identification mark on each ball so the number doesn't really matter. One suggestion would be to open the whole box and redistribute the balls within each sleeve. 123, 124, 134, and 234. Done.
