Driver - SureFit Tour Hosel Settings - Any Real Difference?

  1. I have a 910 D2 driver, 10.5 degree loft, with the SureFit Tour Hosel.  The shaft is a Bassara W 50, regular flex.

At age 70, I can still hit the ball (Titleist Velocity) pretty straight with a distance of about 210 yards, mostly carry due to soft fairway conditions at our club.

My driver swing produces a slight fade, ball starts straight to target, starts to turn right on the way down and finishes on the fairway with a noticeable left to right spin.

To correct this, and to produce a little more "hang time", I have adjusted the club head to a 11.25 loft with "most draw" (D3).  But, that doesn't really seem to promote a draw and not necessarily any greater distance.

If I understand the adjustment system correctly, when I increase the loft and add draw, the club face is both closed and delofted somewhat.  So, is there really any difference in making this or any other adjustments?

I can be convinced otherwise, but I don't really perceive any significant differences when making adjustments.

    Hi Rich,

I'm sure that others on TT will add their own observations and comments so here are my "two cent's worth".

With approximately 210 yards of distance with your driver and it being mostly carry as you noted, it seems to me that you are still swinging the club very well - all things being considered.

This being said, my experience in "tinkering" with the hosel settings is that there is a minimal difference, and that most of the influencing factor that contributes to the fade, or a slice in the extreme, is the face at impact and the club path.

IF you are up for it and wanting the challenge, I would suggest a session or two with your local pro to specifically work on your driver swing and club face at impact so as to promote a different swing path and position of the club face at impact.

I've been working on this for much of the past couple of months and am starting to enjoy some success with this as my ball flight with the driver is straighter and more of a draw as the occasion calls for it -- this after a lifetime of having a natural fade swing with my driver!

That's my two cents worth ... remember, you get what you pay for! :-) ... so I hope this is some "food for thought" and I would be interested in hearing what you chose to do. All the best. D

  3. Dino, thanks for your reply to my question.

I do, in fact, rely on our club pro for lessons and an occasional launch monitor analysis of my swing.

But, you have provided an answer to my question when you indicate that, in your experience, there is a minimal difference in your ball flight using the SureFit Tour Hosel settings. I would be interested in others opinions as well.

Yesterday was a good example.  I was at the range at my club hitting balls with my driver. With the setting on D3 (most draw), the ball started straight, then faded at the end of the flight.  Since the impact label showed an on-center hit, that would indicate a good swing path with a slightly open club face.  So, I began to wonder if the D3 setting was causing the club to impart left to right spin on the ball.  I changed the setting to C3 (less draw).  Same result.  So, I changed the setting to D4, the standard setting. Same result.

That is why I ask if the settings really make that much difference, if any difference.  Loft changes seem to have an effect on ball flight, but not lie changes.

    Hi Rich,

Have you ever tried adjusting your hosel settings during a session with the launch monitor? Perhaps 5-6 swings per hosel setting while trying to maintain your same swing path.

This type of experimentation could provide you some additional insight. Regardless, would like to hear other TT members thoughts on this too.

    All the best Rich!

The settings can only do so much. Anyone using a high-handicapper driver with a lot of offset knows they are improving when the ball starts to hook. They are closing the face better. A launch monitor can tell the story better, but as you add loft through adjustment, you are also adding more spin. The settings won't overcome swing faults entirely. By trial and error, you can add more draw but keep the loft at 10.5 to see if that slows down the side spin. With the launch monitoring, you may also tweak your grip or swing just enough as well. My sad realization is there is right equipment for me, but no equipment to fix me.

My ball flight is a draw. I am only 5-10 and change between the B-1 or C-1 setting & I still produce the draw. IMO I think the adjustments for lie angles (most draw / most fade) seems to have more to do with the starting line of my shot rather than the shape. The effect would be similar if you took your wedge and raised the toe up the face would want to point left, therefore the ball would likely want to start to the left of target.
