Along with a close friend

It was 1984 at a country club invitational well known for competition and folks willing to wager a few pennies on matches. My friend Rus Gardner and I worked together He was a good golfer great athlete and one of the tightest competitors I've known We worked together building a fabulous business. We where off to a slow start down in almost every match on our wager sheet even though we were in 5th place going into final round My plus 1 handicap was tough to play on the road with so many tremendous 7-15 handicappers having "career" weekend , many with even par rounds , daily! I play 1956 Ben hogan precision permission woods and a Titleist balata ball. On the 5th hole I was 2 under and swinging very well it was a 300 yard straight away par 4. Very narrow hole bunkered green with 40 foot falloff left of green The green was half the size of most muni greens in the day. That's why it played 1 stroke over par for the tournament . Birdie or bogey and worse I stepped up hit my 3 wood on the screws as I bent to pick up tee Rus said "its in the hole! " This statement while the ball was halfway to the hole! He never before , never after uttered those words to me! I actually think he willed it into the hole. 12 witnesses on or near green and next tee watched the ball hit green in air and rolled directly into the hole! It was my first of 3 hole in ones ( all with titelist balls) This on a par 4! Sadly many years later cancer took my friends life at way too early an age. But that moment along with Rus we shared something together that will be a memory forever !
