My first ACE at age 58
By Clayton F On 15 July 2012
I have been playing golf for more than 27 years, but I didn't get started regularly until nearly my 31st birthday. I would have thought after all the rounds of golf played over the years that I would have made a hole in one before now, but I never had until Saturday, July 14,2012. This summer has been extremely hot and our weekly Saturday Dogfight group has been trying to tee off about 7:30 a.m.to beat the heat. After shooting a 79 the prior week I thought I might have another good round this weekend since I had been hitting the ball fairly well the past few weeks. After starting my round off fairly strong I faded and joined the "bogey train" and then "worse" for a few holes. The second nine we played that morning was on the "Waters Course" (our club has 3 nines)and after making a couple of pars in a row, I was feeling better about finishing my round on a good note. The 6th hole (our 15th hole played) is a Par 3 that plays about 137 yds from the regular (white) tees. I generally hit a good 9 iron into this hole depending on the location of the flag and wind direction. This morning it felt more like a three quarter 8 iron. I chose the 8 and hit a nice high draw that we saw hit the green, but I never saw the finish. The flag was in the shade of the pines behind the green and one of my partners said she thought it went in the hole. I felt since I was sort of between clubs that I hit it too long with the 8 iron and it went thru the shadows and over the back of the green. When we got to the green, my cart partner drove us to the back of the green, but no ball was in sight. I went onto the green, looked in the cup and there it was! Great shot and a great feeling with good friends to witness it. That's what playing this frustrating game is all about!!
