My First Hole in One
By Gary S On 4 March 2014
I play golf most Mondays and Fridays with an enjoyable group of 10 to as many as 20 senior men including a few very close friends. Everyone in the group has had at least one hole-in-one at one point or another except for a two of us. I play quite often and have an index of 6.5, so I hit a fair amount of par 3 greens in regulation. But, as the years have passed, no luck. That is, until March 3, 2014 at Mather Golf Course (formerly the Mather Air Force Base Golf Course)in Rancho Cordova, California on the 7th hole, a par 3 of 165 yards. I was playing in a 3-some with one of my best friends. I struck a 6 iron well, left of the flag because the green sloped to the right. I thought I was too far left as the ball disappeared behind a bunker on the front left of the green. As we watched, the ball appeared and trickled down the slope of the green and lodged between the flag and the cup for a second and then dropped into the cup. After a bit of yelling and high fives we approached the green. I'm a little hesitant, looking for my ball. Was it really in the hole or were we somehow mistaken? It WAS in the hole! What a wonderful feeling. Thirty-five years of golf was worth it for this experience.
