Saving It For A Rainy Day
By Timothy R On 11 July 2015
It started with a last minute call by my buddy Jeff to fill in for his golf league as one was out of town on vacation. It was raining all day. It was raining all month it seemed like. I went straight from a meeting (clubs happened to be in the car from the July 4th outing) to the course through 5pm traffic. Of course there's a wreck on the only highway there... thought I was going to have to cancel. I decided to take surface roads around the wreck and got there about 15 minutes before tee time. We were playing the back nine and there was a discussion about whether we were playing Whites or Blues. Vote was 5/4 for those in attendance to play white... thank the lord. My first Tee shot was a doozy... never left the ground, and about 60 yards. "This is gonna be a great day" I sarcastically tell myself. 10 - triple bogey 8; 11 - triple bogey 7; 12 - double bogey 6; on to 13. Par 3. 5 would have kept the pattern alive.... I had a friend tell me that if your swing was inconsistent to put something under your right arm to keep it close and in. Grabbed my golf towel, and decided to give it a shot. I take a look at the placard, and its 148 from the whites. I can hit my 9 iron 160 when I get a hold. I decide I'm gonna play it with an easy swing while clubbing up. Just hit it straight dummy. Picked up the 7. I take a look at the green, and it has a noticeable tier running perpendicular to line of sight. Low closest to me with the back side of the green elevated. The pin is sitting bottom right toward the front. Traps on both sides. "I just want to put it in the direction of the green" is what I'm telling myself after the way I was playing. I hit the ball crisp and dead straight. The ball fell about 12 feet past the hole right at the bottom edge of the tier. It dug in and spun back and to the right just slightly. We all got to watch it fall right in. Never had that feeling before in my life. Can only explain as it felt like I just did something wrong and was about to get yelled at, and then I realized that what I did is near impossible for my skill level, and was just shocked... still don't believe it. Story for life.
