Turkey Tough Day

At Ballyhack, in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, we play an annual superintendent's-revenge, captain's-choice event known as Turkey Tough Day. Last year, the event happened to fall on Halloween and included the normal amount of craziness like pins in unreachable positions, wooden walls built around pins, equipment on the fairways, etc. The 17th hole at Ballyhack is a shortish par 3 to a green divided into three separate areas by severe ridges in the green. The superintendent had placed two pins in the green, one on either side of the ridge that runs left to right through the green. Both were positions difficult to get close to and on slopes that would have made putting nearly impossible. Choosing the pin on the face of the ridges and measuring at 157 yards, I hit a smooth 7-iron. It landed about four feet left and dead pin high, took one hop, and spun in the direction of the cup. Since I'm getting older than I want to admit, I couldn't see that it had gone in nor could anyone else in our group. But we thought the shot would be close and hopefully straight up the fall line for a putt to a spot halfway up a very steep slope. When we got to the green, we discovered that the ball had somehow caught in the far right side (from the tee) of the cup. My team members were all very excited for me but, truth told, probably were more relieved that they didn't have to try to make what we were all thinking would be a nightmarish putt!
