Thomas posts 59 at Sony Open

How do you follow up a win in your first event of 2017 on the PGA TOUR? Well, if you're Titleist brand ambassador Justin Thomas, you go out and post a 59 in the first round of the next event.

The day immediately got off to a hot start for Thomas with a chip-in for eagle on his first hole, the par 4 10th. He had a slight hiccup, making bogey on the next hole, and walked to the 12th tee thinking this round might not be that special.

It’s safe to say his initial in-round assessment was a bit premature.

Thomas went on to card a total of eight birdies and another eagle to post an 11-under-par round and become the youngest player in PGA TOUR history to sign for a 59.

“It was a fun day out there. It was the most I had ever had it rolling,” said Thomas. “I just had a lot of really good looks and kept leaving it in the right spots, and I was just driving it well.”

Now getting to the magic number came down to the last hole for Thomas. Stepping up to the 9th tee, he knew he needed an eagle to post a 59. After a solid drive and approach, he arrived at the green with a 15-footer standing between him and a chance to etch his name in the history books.

“I never had a putt on the last hole on a Thursday mean that much,” added Thomas. “Obviously I knew what it meant if I made it, and that was the first time I had a putt at 59. I was like, well, who knows when this is going to happen again, I may as well try and knock it in. I hit a great putt.”

He certainly did.

The putt rolled in and was quickly followed by a high-five from long-time friend and fellow Titleist brand ambassador Jordan Spieth who had a front row seat as one of his playing partners for the day.

“Just really awesome for J.T., making history today. Fun to be a part of. What an amazing finish,” said Spieth.

And how did Thomas plan to unwind after his amazing round?

“Well, we'll go have a good afternoon, shake it off, and just kind of chill, go to North Shore and I think that will get my mind off it a little bit. Just get a good night's sleep and get out and try to hit some more fairways and greens.”

Sounds like a great plan. Congrats, Justin!
