I did the Tour van fitting a few months ago and we had a huge problem with the amount of spin I am producing. with the 6 irons my SS was on average 98mph and spin was 7200 we delofted my irons 2* which got us to 6900rpm. He told me one way to lower the spin is to switch to MB's. I was told the optimal was close to 6000rpm. I currently plat 710 AP2's with X100's. Thinking about switching to project x 7.0's. the question is should I get MB's with the 7.0's or should I try them in my AP2's that I love?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I don't think blades will lower your spin rate. Blades are for lower trajectory w/higher spin, for better ball control.

I know it seems from what I read on this board that 6 iron is 6000rpm no matter what.........there is more to it than that.

At 98mph with 6i, a would just wildly guess that you have a powerful swing, and most likely hands well in front of the clubhead at impact. This increases spin, also lowers trajectory.........this is good

If the ball goes out and curves upward, you got too much spin. If the ball goes out and up on pretty much a straight line you should be ok, except into the wind, then you will probably balloon.

A swing change where you aren't leading the club as much would reduce spin, but its usually not a good idea to change your swing. But you can change the effect of your swing without actually changing your swing.

Most likely you don't lead a 4i as much as a 6i, so lengthening the 6i shaft 1inch and flattening the lie to match should lower your spin rate some, I can't tell you how much. But before doing anything, I'd look at if you really need to lower your spin rate.

Switching from AP2's to MB's will definitely lower your spin rate as the AP2's have a bigger chassis and weight lower in the head which creates more spin and higher launch.  Obviously you would be switching to a less forgiving club which is ok if your a good ball striker.  You won't see any spin difference to speak of by going from X-100's to Project X 7.0's as both these shafts are low launch, lower spin shafts.  So I think your on the right path by considering MB's versus a shaft change.

I would also highly consider a combo set MB (short irons)/CB (long irons).

    Best of Luck!

The answer will only come from testing.  You might find a great combination with the AP2 or the CB or MB might be what you need.  It really depends on the player and what the testing reveals.  The Project X 7.0 will work for your swing speed, but might not produce the ball flight you are looking for.  Another shaft to throw in the mix is the KBS C-Taper.  I have found some success with this shaft combination for high spin players.

Remember that the most important objective of the fitting is overall performance and don't get stuck if some of your numbers are outside the "optimal" range.  Many players on Tour are outside of optimal.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the responses guys this is really what i was looking for. I have considered going with a combo set and that is probably the way I will go. I really like c-taper shafts I hit a Miura Blade with the C-taper x-flex and it was pretty close to "optimal" but like most people I am trying to do this on a budget. I think I will go to the shop that does all my work and play with a few more ideas before making a decision.

    Thanks
