I've been thinking about taking my old Titleist 690.CB irons to a nearby Watts store to have the lofts and lies bent. I'd like them 1* upright, which shouldn't bother anything, BUT, and this is a big BUT... If I have the lofts bent to a modern standard, generally about 3* stronger on each club, will that affect the sole angle enough to cause a serious difference in turf interaction?

Is there any serious downside to doing this? Does it weaken the club hosel? I wouldn't mind if I couldn't  go all the way to a modern loft standard and kept it at a 2* loft change, or there abouts

    Thoughts?

    Thanks...

At 3* strong, your 6i will have .5* bounce.

If you check cb's you will see your clubs are 1* weak of "modern loft"

Now if your talking about super game improvement lofts, those clubs have an extremely low cg, which causes a higher launch angle, which in turn needs lower loft to keep the spin rate down.

I would think that with 1* weaker lofts from "normal", means your clubs probably have a slightly higher cg thus slightly lower trajectory and needing a little bit more spin.

When I checked the lofts on the 690.CB irons, they were 2*-3* weaker than a modern set I have, (G15), so your thoughts about the center of gravity are well thought out. For example, the Titleist pitching wedge is 48* versus a 45* wedge in the modern G15 set.

On the other hand, I always hit my Titleist irons very high and if the bend made me hit them lower, it might not be the worst thing, considering the wind we play in during the Miami summer.

    Might be worth a try...

I'm taking the clubs to Watts today. Looking at the difference between my Titleists and my Pings, I don't think I want to go so far as to match the Pings lofts, but looking at the gaps between clubs, I think I've found a happy medium that will wind up in a set I could still play with not too much change in what I hit from any distance.

To be honest, what this all came from is a bit stupid, my being so damned old fashioned that I simply prefer looking down and seeing a classic looking iron instead of my Pings, which I think look like farm implements.

I really don't care if I have to admit I'm 62 years old and have to hit a 7 iron from 150 yards instead of an 8 iron. Where I wold lose out on the difference in sets is with the hybrid. I have a Ping 17* hybrid that effectively replaces my 3 wood. I wouldn't have that benefit with the Titleist set unless I mixed brands or found another club to add that covers the 220 yard area. I'm 10 yards shorter with that hybrid, but I'm much more consistent with it and it's probably good for saving me 2 shots a round. Where I play, I find myself hitting it about 5-6 times a round, whether off the tee or off the fairway... (Who am I kidding... out of the rough is more like it)

Only time and a few rounds will tell.
