I've decided to invest in a new set of irons for the first time in 5-6 years. I currently play blades with TTDG s300 shafts, +1/2". I'm debating between the AP1 or 2, and I'm looking for advice on which shafts to put in them. I've been hitting tons of balls at the local golf shop to compare feel and launch characteristics (for what they're worth hitting into a screen off a mat indoors with no pressure). I'm seeing average 7 iron swing speeds around 84mph - avg. ball speed 122. When I hit S300's or Project X 6.0's, my dispersion pattern varied quite a bit. Nothing horrible, but definitely noticeable. However, when I tried KBS Tour X's and DG x100's, I rarely left the center line (even though I did lose 5-10 yards overall distance).
Based off what I've discovered visiting the golf store, my inclination would be to lean towards the KBS Tour X and maybe soft-step them a touch, then go with the AP1's - a little more forgiving and higher launch. Or... do I stick with the Project X 6.0's and go with the AP2's?
I'm hopeful someone here has had similar experiences and can help me with my decision. I was definitely not expecting the X shafts to feel that good, especially given my age and swing speeds, but I would be more than happy lose a few yards if I hit it that straight on the course!
For reference, I'm 41 years old with a 5.5 hdcp. and 114mph avg. driver swing speed. My driver is a 44.5" 910 D2 9.5deg equipped with a Diamana whiteboard in X flex, and I absolutely love it. My current 7iron is bent weak 1deg to 36, and I consider it my 162 - 168yd. club. Ball flight not quite penetrating enough for my liking.
Thanks!
