Building a 57 degree Volkey Wedge

  1. I am looking to get a new set of volkey wedges built. I have 47 degree pitching wedge and would like a 5 degree gap between wedges leaving me with a 52 and 57.  At this point I'm stuck on my decision for building the 57 based on bounce.  If Titleist made a 57 degree I'm assuming it come in the following bounces based on averages between the 56 and 58.

    slider - 6 degree bounce

    either   - 9.5 bounce

    digger - 13 bounce

First I'm currious if these assumptions seem logical. Here are the options I have.

    57.3  - 58.4 strong 1

    57.7  - 58.8 strong 1

    57.9  - 56.8 weak 1

    57.11 - 58.12 strong 1

    57.12 - 56.11 weak 1

    57.15 - 56.14 weak 1

I am trying to stay more neutral which leaves me with these 2 choices.

    57.9  - 56.8 weak 1

    57.11 - 58.12 strong 1

I was originally leaning towards the 57.9 but was recently advised from a golf shop that people tent to have better results bending a club strong than weak.  Additionally when the looking at the pictures of the 56 vs the 58 the soles appear signicantly different.

Am I on the right path? Is there more to consider other than the basic calculations I've put together? I'd be happy to hear any input from the Titleist team.

    Thank you,

    Jeff

  2. Hi Jeff -

You are on the right track.  I could only guess as to what Mr. Vokey would find the proper bounces for a 57 degree to be.  I imagine they would be based on the type of grind he would use for this 57 degree.

You have shown that there are already plenty of ways to get to a 57 degree wedge from our available Vokeys.  Your decision should take into account the following questions:

What type of shots will you be making with this wedge?

What conditions will you be using this wedge in?

What kind of wedge player are you (slider, either, digger)?

The 58.08 and 58.12 use our "M" grind, which is a popular Tour grind that plays with less effective bounce than its measured bounce, but offers a wide range of versatility in playing open faced shots.  Since you will be carrying only a 52 and 57 I would think you may want to consider a strong 58 for its increased versatility.  Choose the bounce appropriate for your swing style.

I hope this has helped.  If you have more questions or would like to discuss any further questions with a Team Titleist rep, please call 1.888.TITLEIST
