I recently had a lesson with a local PGA Pro. He noticed something which I have in the past - I tend to drag my short irons left. He suggested it may be an idea to have my short irons slightly flatter than the rest of my set.

This seems like a good idea, I just wasn't sure where I should stop or should they be graduated. For example 6 - 8 iron 1 degree flat and 9 - PW 2 degree flat. For the avoidance of doubt I currently play AP2's which were custom fitted but came back as being standard lie.

I had the same problem, mine were 2 deg upright and now I have just got them bent to standard. What you should do is get some masking tape on the soles of your irons and go and hit some balls off a bit of plastic board or something and see where the impact mark is on the sole. If it's nearer the heel they need to be flatter. Cheers Mark

It's a great idea bad highly recommended. Checking the lies just to begin with will be good, then going two flat from there. Check your wedges a well.

Since I am only 5 foot 5 and 14 years old i got standard length ap2 710 with standard lie but after a few weeks i went from a draw to a considerate slice so my instructor flattened the lie and i am able to cut and fade now. Decreasing the lie will greatly help a left shot as well with increasing ball flight because hooks tend to be low and eratic. I got my clubs flattened in 5 minutes for free so it is worth it.

Put tape on all your irons and hit each one from a lie board - that will tell you what to do.

I have recently gone thru a club and swing change, I also pulled my pw pretty bad. For some reason(habit) I had gone back to playing the ball in the middle of my stance and my stance wider, which of course made my hands closer to the ground.

My divots were heel deep, and only about 3/4 of the blade entered the ground(toe did not enter the ground), which would indicate a lie angle too upright.

I realized what I was doing, moved the ball forward in my stance and narrowed  my stance(raising my hands) and I started hitting the ball straight, divots were level.

When you got fit, was it fitting 1 iron(maybe 5i or 6i) then just matching the rest of the set, or did you go thru fitting for each iron?

Very common fitting scenario. Longer irons more upright and short irons flatter. If you look historically at industry lie/loft settings a lot has changed. Lie angles use to be 1 degree different per club, now most are 1/2 degree. this has the same effect. Also at manufacurers "tour" or blade iron lie angles set up flatter. Bottom line most folks need a bit of help getting long irons up and drawing so upright helps. If your short irons come off left definitely flatten them. You will even notice this left issue with pitch shots
