Am I better off being fit indoors (e.g., PGA Superstore, Golfsmith) vice otudoors. Is there any real difference?

The indoor fitting is a "get you in the ballpark" type of thing and is a start to a total fitting. They'll get the lie angles on the irons close (because the scuff marks are dead center on the lie tape doesn't necessarily mean that the ball will go dead straight on the course - I found out that my dead straight shot had the scuff marks 1 tick toward the toe, using a "reference" iron). You'll have data for distance, dispersion, swing speed, launch angle, spin, etc on the launch monitor; however, the distance isn't necessarily accurate. I've had shots I hit dead straight on the grass that were a small push on the launch monitor. Hitting off mats is different than hitting off grass. You can notice this going to different driving ranges. You may experience a harder time hitting a club off a mat and it may mask some swing faults (such as hitting fat).

Inside will tell you the differences that day between shaft and head spin rates, but won't tell you ball flight or how it reacts. Launch monitors are a program that estimates spin and launch rates and they can vary by a lot. A good fitter with a top notch launch monitor can make use of those numbers along with ball flight to fit you optimally. Anytime you have a choice - go for outside on grass.

Reiterating on the launch monitor vs grass..... Before I reshafted my Eye 2 irons (the 7 had KT-M stiff and the 8 had DG X), I was hitting the 8 iron 2-3 yards farther than the 7 (hence why I carried a 34H at that time) on the grass.

When I took it to a launch monitor, the 7 iron was showing what I expected (150 yd) and the 8 was showing 122 yd average with a wide shot dispersion. A Titleist DCI 981 (with DG R300 Sensicore) was showing what I expected out of an 8 iron (135-140 yards). The DCI 7 iron actually did go 7-8 yards farther than the Eye 2 on the grass.

After I reshafted the Eye 2's to TT Lite XL regular, the distances between them and the DCIs differ by maybe 2 yards (and that is mainly due to the loft diffs). The DCIs are +1/2* and the Eye 2's are yellow dot so the lie angles are pretty close to each other and the contest is even.

I had a fitting done in 2007 at Golfsmith with a set of their P2 irons (probably one of the better sets of custom player irons). The fitter bent the 9 and wedges upright - no problem. The lie board recommended flattening the 8 iron - I took it to the range and couldn't hit it at all so I had the lie angle restored and was able to hit it again.

Thank you everyone.  The issue was take a 3 hr drive to Atlanta (I live in N. Alabama) to a PGA Superstore or take a plane ride to Sea Island.  Everyone's input seems to be that the extra time and expense of an airplane and rental car is worth the investment.  That is what I thought but wanted expert confirmation.  Thank you again. I will see what availability they have in Dec and update you when I have the fitting.  Tim

Ok, here is the update.  I found I could fly out of Nashville (1 1/2 hr drive) early on a weekday on Southwest to Jacksonville, get to Sea Island for a two hour fitting (1-3 pm) and be back to Jacksonville in plenty of time to catch the flight home at 7pm.  All for $130 RT!  This means no stay over and hotel expense and also eliminates taking an extra day of leave.  The airlines are wildly expensive ($500) on the weekend during Dec so by going and returning on Thursday I save a lot of money - money that will probably go the new clubs we are certain to decide on.  I am set to see Craig on Dec 15 and cannot wait.  My buddies are already telling me I am out of control, which means they are eaten up with jealousy of course (hehehe)

outside outside outside - you gotta see the ball flight - a good flight, i.e. proper trajectory, shape, accuracy and distance, is what we are all working for, so you must see the flight of the ball when getting set up for new clubs.  I know that there are fitters who only have the option of working indoors, and they do a good job, but I personally would NEVER get fitted for clubs that way.

    Timothy,

Always better to be fit outdoors where you can see the ball in flight and also how the shots are reacting to the wind as well.

    Best of Luck

    Tim,

Brian Speakman is doing some Team Titleist fittings using Trackman over the next week at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham.  He is the Titleist Tech rep for Alabama and is very quailified.   Call him to schedule an appointment if you like.  (205) 383-8843 or email brianspeakman@hotmail.com.

Outdoor is the way to go.
