Bounce in the wedges

  1. I recently bought a set of the vokey SM4 wedges in 52 and 58 degrees (lowest bounce in each). I am not seeing as much spin and hit the ball a lot higher than I did with my old ones. If I have more bounce in the wedge will this help me hit it lower than the wedge with less bounce? If I just put in the DG Spinner shaft would this help me get more spin and hit it lower? Just not sure if I should go out and buy new wedges with more bounce since I just bought these. Thanks, Dan

Technically, more bounce will help you hit it lower using the same swing.  The DG Spinner can help flight the shot lower, but only slightly.

In most cases, assuming your technique hasn't changed, you will hit lower bounce wedges higher on the face.  Just like a driver, higher on the face produces higher launch and less spin.

Their are some technique adjustments you can make to hit the ball lower.  The bottom of your swing needs to be wider and shallower.  One drill we use to create a slider impact is to place a tee in the ground about a clubhead width in front of the ball.  The objective:  hit the shot and flip the tee out of the ground without a large divot.  You can try without a golf ball as well.

This drill helps widen the bottom of your swing.  Diggers tend to have a steep entry into impact and a steep exit after impact.  The drill helps feel the wide bottom of the swing seen in sliders with lower bounce wedges.
