I was just wondering if any has ever or is currently using and AP1/AP2 combo set of irons. I was hoping to get some insight on how they are working out for you and what your set make up is. I am seriously considering this and would love to hear more.

    Thanks!

My setup is 4-6 AP1, and 7-W2 AP2 with 2 Vokey's.   Love the setup.   Only have a handful of rounds on them and still dialing in distances, but amazing so far.

How did you come to that set make up? and is the amount of forgiveness extremely noticeable in between the two?

    Thanks.

Considered that same set-up when I bought my clubs in November but decided against it at the last minute, because and the 6 irons were close in the simulator and I just did not like the looks of the AP1s........sometimes when my game is off, I wish I had a little more foregiveness.......

When I purchased my 712 AP2s, I purchased supplicate 4 and 5-irons in both the AP1 and AP2 with the idea of having amore forgiving club for the longer irons.  After hitting both the AP1 and AP2 for a while, I settled on the AP2 as the choice for the entire set.  This was more of a personal preference based on feel and the look of the head at address.  The AP1's were certainly more forgiving, but the look and feel of the AP2s won out.

In switching over to the 714 AP2s, I went straight AP2 across the entire set and didn't purchase the AP1s to give a try.  However, when I was hitting and playing with the AP1s prior to my order, I noticed that the head size on the 714 AP1s looked better to my eye and seemed cleaner than it was in the 712 version.  I just found it hard to get away from the smooth feel you get from the AP2s.

I guess the bottom line here is to take some time and play with both permutations to see what you like, what feels good and what looks good to you.  There are a lot of people playing with combo sets out there and you need to put the clubs in your hand to see what they feel like before you can decide for yourself.  Be sure to consult with your fitter if you are doing a combo set to make sure you get the correct yardage gaps between your clubs because the specs on the AP2 and AP1 are a little different (1-2 degrees of loft depending upon which club you are looking at).

I appreciate the responses fellas. As for looks, in my opinion the AP1 series is the best looking game improvement iron on the market. I currently play with a set of 704 cbs and franky I need some help when it comes to forgiveness but it's tough because I love the look of a players iron. Another question for you guys, is the amount of forgiveness between the AP1 and AP2 night and day? Or does the AP2 allow you to get away with some things?

I know tour pros are playing AP2's and not CB's or MB's so that is kind of a red flag for me. I'd love to play AP2's but I may need the forgiveness of the AP1's so that's why I'm considering a combo set, hoping it would be a happy medium. I plan on attending a fitting day near where I live next week and hopefully these questions can be answered but I love hearing from everyday guys who are Titleist enthusiasts as well.

    Hi DJ,

    Thank you for your question.

The AP1 is designed with a higher MOI to allow for more forgiveness than any other Titleist model.  However, the AP2 is also very forgiving and offers tremendous feel and workability.

As for usage out on tour, it is fairly evenly divided between AP2, CB and MB with even a couple tour players using AP1's.

I am sure you can have your questions answered at the fitting day, but in the mean time please let us know if you have any further questions.

    Take care,

    I also have a combo set,   I have a 3 &4 iron AP1, and 5-PW AP2, and then Vokey SM4 54 & 60deg wedges.  Love the combo set.

Another option is 5-9/PW in AP2 and use 21/24 hybrids instead of AP1s.  Even more forgiveness than the AP1s.

I went with a combo set with AP1 in 5 and 6 irons and AP2 in 7 through GW.  I did order the 5 and 6 irons 1* weak on the loft so that the gaps would match up with the AP2's.

Although I do not play with a combo set of AP1/AP2, I have a set of both.  AP1's are 710 and AP2/'s are 712.  For me, AP2's are used when I have a few rounds in as well as some range practice at beginning of season because I find I need to be more precise.  I play the AP1's in winter and when I first start out for the season.  There is no doubt AP1's are more forgiving, the loft is stronger so distances are more of what my mind expects throughout the progression of lofts.  Have not hit the 714's but if like the former models, I would recommend AP1's in the longer irons, if not all if your handicap is above 10.   I am an 8 and nothing feels better than flushing the 4 or 5 in the AP2's but the user makes all the difference.  Both models are golden.  You cannot go wrong.  Confdence is key.

Started with AP2 712s, 5-PW. Replaced 5 and 6 irons with new AP1 714s (fit to match AP2 specs.)  Smartest move I have made. Now have much more confidence in 5 and 6 irons.

FYI, 9 hdcp. Play 100+ rounds a year.
