  1. Titileist R & D Department,

We need a Titleist 913TB 3 Wood that is between the maxi-sized 913D (2 or 3) and the industry fad Mini-sized 913F series!

The problem is that an industry fad sized "Mini" faced 3 Wood, realistically can only consistently be used off of the fine, pristine grasses of the manicured fairway and never out of the rich rough (hence the term "fairway" wood).  When you are playing a target course or an expensive course or a tactically measured track (that places moguls, creeks, fairway bunkers or supper tall rough in normal driver distance locations or super narrow fairways with water or sage brush on both sides) you can not risk the used of your trusty 913D driver.  We all know that because of the driver's flat rolled face and the near vertical face angle, a mondo 913D will knife you out there with the best of anyone, but any 1 degree of off line trajectory will yield tens of yards off line and out of the hole!  So you have to play aggressively conservative and tee off with a more rounder rolled face, with a more forgiving launch angle, to consistently stay in play at the course designer's limited distances and width.

When you attempt to use these industrial fad shallow faced woods off of the teeing ground (while on a short peg), any wind or sway or muscle flex or twitch in muscle memory, you either top, scull or sky your critical tee shot and throw away that holes scoring opportunity!  With the huge technological advancement of the Hybrid heads, that can not only reach the same distances off the fairway as these industry fad mini-woods, but also can get you those same distances out of the rough, flat fairway bunker or even out of the weeds and again punch you out from under trees and bushes ... why carry any one time use industry mini fairway woods?

No, that base is covered nicely by our trusty 913H line of Hybrids!  What we are now needing in today's mathematical trickery of course design and redesign, is a throw back to the ..."I can get it up the gut" Mid-sized, tall faced, forgiving face roll and diverse launch angled, off of the tee "Tee Box Fairway Wood" 913TB Series (by the time you all debate this 5 year old idea, take some surveys, weigh the cost of patents, a marketing analysis, design surprises and foundry mold changes, it will be a 914 or 915).

The miracle of today's "SureFit" hossels, this club head change could easily be match with our existing lines of custom shafts and custom lengths for the correct "Swing Weight" and flex.  A light weight mid-sized Fairway head may even be "retrofitable" to existing Titleist 913D or 913F owners shafts!  That would give us an edge over other manufacturer's lines that are not flexible enough or interchangeable enough to compete with Titleist's ability to "tool up" our customers to meet, match and beat today's ever changing course venues!

I primarily use the three wood off the tee box when I need to ensure a tight shot dispersion as (I think) Dale is talking about here.  Because I use it much more off the tee box and not from the fairway or other lies, I went with the 913Fd, which has a little deeper face and a more forward center of gravity and I have found is more effective off the tee for my game.  if I need to hit a ball of the fairway, I can still use this club, but I really have it set up for tee shots.

As far as distance, the ball from the 3 wood generally only averages about 20-30 yards or so shorter than my driver.  In my opinion, this club really performs in the slot where I need good distance with a tight dispersion.

Almost sounds like a "mini driver".......

I went with a strong three wood that is better off the tee and fairway.  My theory was I almost never need three wood distance out of the rough.  If I'm in the rough and far enough out that I need my three wood, I'm grabbing a long iron or hybrid and relying on my ability to get up and down.

I carry a 17* 4 wood, and it works great off the Tee, and also the fairway. Off the fairway it gets the ball higher and just as long as a 3 wood with a softer landing into the green than a 3 wood. Off the Tee I can depend on it to hit the fairway, and it's only about 20 yards shorter than my driver. To add some sort of a "Tee Box" 3 wood would mean that something else would have to come out of my bag. Don't want to give up anything that's in my bag now that I use a lot for a club that I'd use once or twice per round as a "TEE Box" club. To me this "Tee Box" 3 wood just sounds like another one of TM's gimmick to sell more clubs. IMHO, I don't think I need a so called "Tee Box" 3 wood.

Sounds like you need to be using the FD model. that was kind of a long winded attempt at saying you want a titleist mini driver. honestly there is no real point to the mini driver its a niche golf club and only a few players will ever truly benefit from it. there is nothing better than lessons at this point.

cheers greens and fairways to all

I have the 913Fd and it works great off the tee and the deck.  I have the 13.5 version and feel that it is very effective when the driver (a 913D3 8.5) is not the club needed for the hole.

I truly wish that Titleist would go back to a 15 degree hybrid - that is what I need to upgrade!
