Just a word of advice to all TT members, if you don't have your loft and lies checked on your irons you probably should. I've always heard that this should be done, but never have until recently. It is also my understanding that forged clubs typically need to be checked more often due to the softer metal. I took my in for a checkup and learned that all were slightly off. My 8 iron had more loft than my 9 iron. I baby my clubs, meaning no slamming clubs or throwing, however; I do play approximately 140+ rounds per year and hit thousands of balls. I've had my AP2 714's for 2+ years and still love them as much as the day I received them.

Very good advice, Jonathan and advice that everyone should take. Whenever one is having problems with their distances they should have their lofts checked first. I play three to four days a week and this is something I need to have done. Thanks for reminding me.

Did the 8 or 9 iron loft change because of play or was it off from the start ?

I'm sure the lofts on my 8 and 9 were off due to play. I've had the irons for 2+ years and have played close to 300 rounds and have hit thousands of balls on the range. My irons were custom ordered after a fitting and came directly from Titleist. I've played Titleist my whole golf career and their quality has always been top notch. Getting lofts and lies checked is really a cheap way to feel better about your clubs being dialed in. I also know that your swing can change over time and your lie angles may need to be checked. Over the years my swing club specs went from 1* flat to 2* upright. That's a huge change and if my clubs would not have been changed it would likely have a very negative effect on my ball flight.

I agree. The lie and loft on your irons should be checked at least once per year. You should keep a record and try to take them to the same place every year. That will help ensure consistency if you always use the same lie & loft machine. And even better, if the same person checks and adjusts them every time.

I agree, 100%. We spend too much on our clubs NOT to have them dialed in. I always get mine checked at the beginning of the season when I have my grips replaced, and once more in July. Sometimes the lie angle will be off, even as much as 2 degrees, which makes a huge difference on ball flight, as you can imagine. Usually, my lofts need to be adjusted +/- one degree throughout the set, as well.

I too play a lot of golf every season and probably a little more than I should on the range. It was advised to me to have my irons checked minimum once a year as much as I hit them. And without fail every year the irons I seem to play the most are off a little each season. Didn't worry about checking them this off season since I am swinging a new set of AP1's but that is great advise Jonathan.

michael breed on the golf fix recently demonstrated a very simple way to check your irons for even gapping of loft using a piece of paper. very helpful for a quick maintenance check.
  9. Steve L.,
Where can I find this episode of the golf fix where Michael Breed talks about a quick loft and swing weight checks?

Beginning of every season... Clubs rattle in cars, if you hit off of mats or just get upset and slam your clubs all can effect the loft and lie... A quick preseason check will make certain type clubs play like they should.

I've actually invested in a machine to check and adjust loft and lie's. When I got it I checked the lofts on my irons that I had just bought (cally X22 tours at the time) and discovered they were all over the place. My 6 and 7 irons had virtually the same loft and none of the irons were at factory specs. Definitely have your irons checked, at least once a year. Just an FYI, when I bought a set of AP1's I checked the loft and lies on them. They were dead on to factory specs. I guess you get what you pay for and when you buy Titleist, you get quality control. cally should send someone over to see how its done.

I have never heard of having them checked but thanks now that it has been brought to my attention! And WOW!! 140+ rounds a year is a lot of golf!!! I would love to be doing the same unfortunately here in northern Indiana we have only a good 6 months a year to play

Chuck, If I checked my lofts every time I had a distance problem, I would check them after every round. Great advice from Jonathon. Always have them fitted when I purchase a set though. Have a great year!

Totally agree with you Jonathan, that you need to check your loft and lies! It can make a big difference in your game

Excellent advice, I do it about a month before I start playing regularly in March. I've had lie off a few times on a couple of my AP1 712's. Which can have an effect on striking the ball in the center. If you get it done it and have issues at least you ruled out the clubs to a point....Everyone enjoy the year.

Dropped my irons off @ the local G/T to have my grips re-done. Never thought about checking the loft and lie until I saw this post, so I'm also getting them tuned up.
