My handicap is around an 11, and after suffering massive distance loss with the 714 AP2s last year, I decided to order the 716 AP1s. I know I will gain that lost distance back, but I found a US golf sales site who sells the T MB irons in 6-GW. My questions are..

    1. Is the T MB forged? I am assuming they are not..

    2. I know each T MB iron is a degree weaker than the AP1s, but has anyone played the short irons and noticed they blend well with AP1 long irons? I was thinking of maybe gaming 716 AP1s in 4-7 irons and then blending in a T MB 8 and 9 irons.

    Hey Keano,

Regarding #1, Titleist advertises these T-MB's as being made of Stainless Steel and they are not forged. So whatever you do, if you go this route and you want to tweak the lie angle you better let Titleist do this for you.

Regarding #2, I have read that people are doing this blending. I think Titleist will make the whole set from their MOTO service but the T-MB 2 through 5I can normally be ordered directly from you local Titleist shop. Now where is the cut-off between your highest lofted T-MB and your lowest lofted AP1, that's an issue you need to work out with a trained fitter with a Flightscopt so they can measure your distances, and other trajectory metrics which will aid in your decision.

Let us know how you like your AP1s when the weather breaks and you can get out on the course. I just received my new AP1 about a week ago and had 1 opportunity to play a round. Absolutely loving these club. They hit the ball so powerfully and they are very controllable too. If you get a chance, give the new. 816 H1, or H2 a try also. You might really like these also and could it affect your ultimate decision for the final composition of your bag.

    Best Regards,

    Q1. A- it's cast.
Q2. I have not hit the Short irons. But I have a 6i in TMB- combo with 7-PW CB. The TMB are long and it flies high.

Having the TMB as the short irons in a set is unique and never thought of it that way. I like it!

    Q. Have you hit a 5i side by side with the TMB and the AP1 ?

I thought maybe you could get a feel from both and compare your distance and flight as part of your process- then get fitted, of course.

    Good luck!

Why do you think you were losing distance? And why did you purchase irons that were giving you a significantly less amount of distance when you were fit for them? The AP1 lofts are stronger so, yes you may get more distance but it will not be an apples to apples comparison (I'm not sure that solves the problem). The T-MB's are not forged. What would going to the T-MB in the short irons get you? I see a lot of guys going to the T-MB in the long irons 3-6. If I were you I'd make a list of my set gapping and carry yardages, to see where you are lacking. Then when your mixing sets that have different loft increments you can be sure to get it right. Maybe you had the wrong shafts in your AP2? Too heavy?

Chris, you are not the first person to ask me that. The only thing I can say is...I don't know. I had the AP2s reshafted twice for a total of three separate shafts last summer. Initially got the XP 95s, then TT Dynalite Gold XP (which is what I used with my 712 AP1s) and then KBS tour shafts. Overall I played shafts between 95-110 grams, and I never noticed a gain in distance. Loved the feel of the AP2s, but the ball just died off the club face. An 8 iron is my 150 club, and I wasn't even hitting the AP2 6 irons 150 yards. It made the game less enjoyable. I was thinking about the T MBs for short irons because I played Nke combo muscle back irons a few years back and I really loved the short irons. Additionally, I saw a video review of the T MB irons and they are quite long - almost as long as the AP 1s. I could have the 8-9 irons bent a degree strong to increase the chance of better gapping as the AP1s blend into the T MBs. My ball striking is good enough and consistent enough to play the T MBs up to about a 7 iron. Just something I'm thinking about. After reading all of the responses (thanks all) I think I need to get out and play a few rounds with the new AP1s before I do anything crazy. Then I'll let you guys know!

Thanks for the response, let us know how the AP1/T-MB tryout session goes. And let us know what makes it into your bag!
