I'm 53 years old 5'6' 190 lbs. 10 handicap. I have back issues and I am trying to gain club head speed through equipment. I currently hit the 910 D2 with reg flex shaft. I am interested in the 915 but am undecided between the D2 or D3. Will the smaller head of the D3 give me more club head speed or is forgiveness of the D2 more beneficial?

  2. I have both drivers and I feel the D2 and D3 give me similar if not identical clubhead speed...

The forgiveness of the D2 will most likely be to your benefit...

    IMHO, Good Luck!

You might be able to increase swing speed by using lighter equipment (and I have no idea if the D3 is lighter than the D2), but I think you should work with an instructor first to see what you might be able to change with your swing to increase your speed. If you're still not satisfied after that, then work with a fitter to see what changes you can make to your equipment to possibly increase your swing speed.
  4. Since you are used to the D2 head size, the technological advances of the 915 D2 could (and should) help you all the way around. No way to completely know until you hit it, and hopefully at a place that can give you some numbers. But the advances in the 915 models should help your numbers improve. Of course a properly fitted shaft works wonders too.

    Enjoy the search!

  5. go with the d2 and get a lighter shaft in it. Im a certified club fitter and I would suggest the forgiveness of the d2 plus it has a lighter swing weight. If you want club head speed then the lighter shaft will help you generate that versus the heavier shaft which will give lower spin and more control. If you could get a regular flex mitsubishi basara shaft in it then I would go that route. the basara usually weighs in around 42g which is light so you should gain club head speed that way
  6. I play a 913 D2 driver and recently started incorporating elements of the Stack and Tilt swing method. My swing speed increased. I'm guessing it's due to the tighter swing as well as the increase in angular momentum.

I'm looking to increase my speed further by switching from a stiff shaft to a regular shaft. Can't seem to find one though.

The D3 moves the center of gravity closer to the club face, allowing the ability to "work" the ball more. The D3 is a slightly smaller head (440cm vs 460cm) but I think the club head weight is the about the same. If you're looking for more club head speed, its either in the shaft or swing or both. I would suggest a club fitting and lessons.

For me, I prefer the D3. I tried both of them and I was hitting the D3 better.
With a launch monitor, you should be able to choose the head that give you best ball speed, dispersion, spin and lauch that you are looking for.
Thake and extra care for the loft of the head and the caracter of the shaft.
To maximize distance, high lauch with low spin is a good mix.
    Have a good season.

I prefer the d3, I'm haven't noticed much difference in forgiveness between the two and the D3 gives an incredible sound with well struck shots. The feedback I think helps to make better contact.

If you like to work the ball, and already hit most of your fairways, go with the D3. Still plenty forgiving on mis-hits.

If you miss more fairways than you hit, and don't care about working the ball to both sides, then go with the D2 and it's extra forgiveness and lower spin.

I found the D3 provided me the overall fit with less spin more distance and control. I was fitted and they matched the shafts for my swing speed but I ultimately bought 2 types of shafts

That said no driver is going to be longer when hit with an identical golf shaft, on the perfect sweet spot at the exact same club head speed and with the same golf ball.
What manufacturers are doing is making drivers more forgiving so the area of forgiveness is larger across the face of the club.
Weight distribution within the head or adjustability also helps keeping the right launch angle for a particular clubhead speed.
One could go on and on about the Golf Driver of today, but the truth is the right shaft is really important.

  13. I prefer the D3. There is still pretty good forgiveness with the new D3 head design. The ball launches off this face and gives you some deep drives.
  14. Honestly I can say that since I've tested this theory it's helped my game: Straight is better than long; but long and straight is better than everything else! I like my D3, but when I swing too hard I have to go to my 3 metal, a 915F, off the tee. If it were no charge I'd take the D2 on the course. Most of the volume of the D2 is in the length of the head, not the height, so the aerodynamics are of little consequence at club head speed. Titleist put a lot of thought into us mid handicappers, and I trust their judgment.

I'm surprised you have not tried the 915 D4 with a R-flex 50 to 60 g shaft. It seems as forgiving as the D3, yet I find it as easy to control as the D2.

How far do you hit your Driver now ? If you have back issues no matter what you do you will not gain more speed until you fix the back

I currently hit the d3. I find at my age(48) and at my experience level 3hdcp) the d3 is more workable especially when a lower drive is needed. I used the d2 for half a season and it is very similar to d3 but the d3 is just that much better. The feedback is superior to d2. Distance is same. I suggest you lighten shaft go with d3 and take a lesson on how to work the driver. You will be surprised how easy the d3 can be to fade and draw on command.
  18. I am a club fitter for titleist. I would recommend trying the new diamana red 50 with the D2 head it will give you the best of both more speed and forgiveness.

I have the 915 D3 8.5 deg and love it! It comes the closest to the look I got from all my previous Titleist drivers that are now retired to my garage. The smallesh pear look is perfect!
