Our local course had a Titleist demo day so I went up to check out the clubs.

I was interested in the AP2's but the rep had me hit the AP1 first. I brought my existing 7-iron to warm up and compare. The rep put on a shaft so the club was similar to my existing clubs (off the shelf standard other brand clubs - they were used when I purchased them at Golf Smith).

First I hit the AP1's OK but honestly they did not feel that different from my existing set. They did seem to fly off the club face a bit better, but no big difference in shot shape or flight.

I then tried the AP2's. Struggled at first but then found the sweet spot. The ball flight was a little flatter and I could get the ball to draw better than my old set or the AP1's. We talked some more and tried a different shaft. He asked if I wanted help with getting the ball in the air and I said "No, I don't usually have that problem" to which he replied "It didn't look like it but I wanted to be sure".

He then had me hit off a lie-board with some impact tape on the face and sole (which was hard a first b/c I was 'afraid' of the board !). After I got a few out of the way I started to hit it better and the tape showed I was hitting the ball pretty well on the center but way out on the toe. He put the club head +2° and put new tape on the sole..voila...much better impact marks and the ball really seemed to fly well.

So I picked up a W-5I today and they should be here in 7-10 days. Can't want to get them.

I recently got some SM5 Vokey wedges at the same course (they were on close out at a VERY good price). Should I look at getting those bent more upright to match my others?

Next year I'll got back and look at the hybrids.... :)

  2. Congrats, it sounds like you had a great time!

Hope your clubs get to you soon!

As far as wedges, I would have them bent the same as your irons to start.
  3. Sean...I concur with Chris. I always match the lofts of my Vokey wedges to my Titleist irons. Congrats and enjoy!

Well, after some further discussions with my teaching pro and fitter, I'm going to go to a Titleist Thursday next month to do a complete fitting. I admit I felt a bit rushed and I only hit one shaft. I'm not tall nor do I hit the ball hard so I was really questioning the Stiff shaft (at 35g more than my current R shaft) and +2 lie angle.....I to analytical to spend that much money unless I know for sure it's right for me... I'll update after that's done and hopefully have new clubs on the way then.

I'm sure that after a fitting at Titleist, every aspect will be on point! With the massive amount of info at our finger tips these days, it is very easy to research ourselves into serious confusion! That is when I usually have to sit back and let someone with greater skill and training take over! My experience with Titleist (716 AP2 4- P Vokey wedges c46,52,56 and 60 816 H1 19deg) is that there is such a level of pride from their staff that when your fitting is over, you will have no doubt that you are playing the finest clubs on the course!
