Should I be getting Titleist wedges or Vokey with my new set of customs?

  1. So next month I have a time with Titleist Thursday and plan to order a new set of clubs. So far I am thinking (until I talk to the fitter) AP1 irons 5,6,7,8,9,pw. I really do not play longer irons then that, and the 5 is even pushing it. I want to know one if they will even have the Vokey wedges at this event for me to hit? I want a SC putter too but I was told they will not have those there. I think for the extra $20-$50 per club I would rather have the Vokey. Does anyone know if there is an advantage one over the other? I would like to have them fitted so if they do not offer the Vokey there then that might help me with my decision. I am a higher handicap so I doubt it would make a huge difference but I am kind of a brand name guy too.

When I was fitted for my AP1 (2014) irons , I decided to stay with the AP1 for my wedges ,PW ,Gap (48) and sand (52) so all the shafts would be the same. The only Vokey I use is my lob wedge (58), which use mostly for greenside bunkers. My iron set is 4 iron-Lob Wedge. This works really well for my game.....

You can grab the 46 Vokey instead of the stock PW. I love mine, but I've generally been a forged guy. I think it's a better club on the 3/4 shots...IMO

The stock PW has a 43' loft. The stock 9 iron has a 39' loft. So a 46' Vokey would be a 7 degree difference. Too much for wedges so keep the stock PW. The 46' Vokey could be his gap wedge.

There should be Vokey wedges for you to be fitted with.
  6. Does anyone know if they will fit you for the Vokey while you are at Titleist Thursday? I am a little confused about what all they have to offer there.

I'm a high handicapper as well and I can tell you I put the SM6 50,54 and 58 in play about a month or so ago, and it's the best thing i've done for my game. I'm getting them really dialed in now and on Saturday I missed the first three greens in the round, no surprise, but wedged close enough each time with the 58 to save par on all 3 holes. I highly recoomend as many Vokey SM6's as you can afford and leave the longer clubs out of the bag.

I would go over your concerns with the fitter and see what they say. To me, it all depends upon what types of shots you play with the club. I play the AP2's and go all of the way down to the 50 degree (W) gap wedge because I use this club for full shots at 120 yards. I start dialing it back for more touch shots from 110 yards and closer and take the Vokeys down from there (55, 60 and 64). I have found that the Vokeys are much more versatile but the AP2's are more forgiving for me on full shots. I would assume that the same would be similar with the AP1's but you have a little different loft setups with the 47 degree W and 52 degree W2 wedges. Good luck and let us know how the fitting goes and what setup you ultimately go with.

I would stick to AP1 for you. I would guess that you don't hit partial shots and need forgiveness with the pw, so I would go with your plan and hold out on additional vokeys.

I like what marvin f has to offer. I'm a lower handicap player and lean more to what Edward K has to say. But Marvin haas the right idea for what you are looking for. Go for the AP1 full set and fill in with whatever Vokey fits the course or courses you play most often. The fitter should be able to recommend which one. Even if he doesn't have one with him, he will still have your "numbers" and know the style of shots you will encounter on the type of courses you play.

You can keep the AP1 PW like I did. But you should think about adding a few Vokeys if you want to hit it close. Wedges and putter can really help reduce your scoring the most as a higher handicapper.

Think about a 4-6 degree spacing from the PW. If it was me I'd probably do 50, 54 58 vokey's... I know your PW is 43* with AP1 but i love that vokey set up.

I've chose 5-gap AP2 and Vokey 54 and 58. I might go try the new SM6 to replace my gap , but I love that gap wedge...
  13. All great info. Thanks. I have a Vokey 60 right now that I use all the time. I stopped at a Dicks today to peek around and I do not understand the difference in the model numbers with Vokey. Anything you can help me with?
  14. When you say model numbers do you mean the SM5 vs. SM6? If so they are very similar however the SM6 is weighted specifically to produce a ball flight that's most desirable for the loft you are using. The SM5 were not designed to do this.

If you are talking about the Grinds then those would depend on what course conditions you play in. The SM6 page on Vokey.com describes the different grinds and what would be right for you based on your course conditions.

As far as my recommendation, I'd get the Gap Wedge in the AP's then do Vokey for your Sand and Lob. I'm guessing based on what you've told us about your game that you will probably be taking a lot of full swings with your GW versus flighting it down and hitting different shots. If so I find it makes most sense to match that club to your bag.
  15. I use the AP1 pitching wedge and carry the 50, 54 and 60 SM5 Vokey. I really enjoy hitting the 50 for those 70 to 100 yard shots. I use the 54 for pitch shots and loner bunker shots. The 60 is more of a greenside bunker club and I also use for chips and pitches when I have very little green to work with. The Vokeys have given me a decent short game which is needed as you age and lose a little distance.
