I had the chance to be among the first to hit and be fitted for the 917 driver and fairway woods at the Oceanside Titleist Performance Institute today. We got a chancce to meet with Josh, Chris, Cathi, and a whole host of Titleist employees to walk us through the new product, the technology, and the like.

I think everyone came away really impressed with the 917 line-up. After making a number of tweaks to the loft/lie and the new Surefit CG system, I saw a nice increase in distance. What blew me away was the impact that the CG placement had and how easy it was to see it in the ball flight and the roll out on landing.

Several people saw increased carry and roll out with the fittings. I was fit two years ago for my 915 and was getting a carry of about 245-255 with and totalling about 260-270. Net, I picked up about 2-3 MPH ball speed, carry was about 260-265 and rolling out to about 280. The long of the day was about 290. Spin came down about 200-300 RPM on average. I think fitting is key with this club.

    A few notes:

    - The Surefit system stays the same. We pulled the shaft from my 915 and started the fitting with that. - The D2 is still 460cc, but it looks compact. I'm still in the D3 and stayed in the D3, but for those that think the D2 is too big -- all is say is give it a chance. - Getting fit for this club is worth the time, especially since you can see the changes quickly.

The grey is nice and appealing to the eye. The sound of the club is solid.

It was a fun day and thanks to everyone at Titleist for putting on a great show.

    Hey, Scott!

Yeah, what an awesome day... that was my first time there. The facility, equipment, and the knowledge by every Staff at Titleist were awesome- and most definitely the 917 were was "FAST" awe-inspiring. I was overwhelmed by everything around me that day and needless to say I was very nervous the whole day. My fitter knew or could tell that I was off with my swing that day. Even so, my club head speed had picked up, and my launch angle were much more up to an optimum trajectory, resulting to more carry.

With that much more carry, I thought that my ball wouldn't roll as much, I asked, but it was actually the same or more roll resulting to more distance.

More importantly, what I love about the 917 were my misses and/or dispersions, they were closer together in the intended target. I could only imagine a tough day I'm having on a course, but with the 917 and its fit, I am going to benefit tremendously with it.!!

I'm very excited and I'm looking forward to play the 917 driver and 3wood as soon as I can get my hand on them- 'Can't wait!

Many thanks to Cathi, Chris, Glen, Kim, Josh, Steve, (I'm forgetting some names) Everyone! You are all awesome!

Good Stuff Noel and Scott. I'm very jealous, but loved reading the feedback. I'll have to wait until the 917 Launch this weekend. But I will also be at the Pinehurst TeamTitleist Invitational in two weeks, so I'm sure we'll get a more indepth look at that time.

Great read. I'm heavily in ponder of the 917 compared to the 915

Colby, I am going from the 915 to the 917. The fitting showed me that the CG can make a big difference. Your carry should be proportional to your ball speed/club head speed (smash factor), but the biggest difference for me was changing the angle of descent and getting more distance via the roll. Just remember accuracy = distance.
  6. Thanks for having us! The new 917 is amazing!

Here are a few more photos that I have- I've shared it with my group. Believe it or not, the Titleist water bottle got a lot of attention...but I got a couple inquiries about TPI with the surfboard (like, "You were really there!") Some of them are starting to recognize Josh Talge from the #917 vids that are coming out on Facebook, and each time I mention that Chris works on Titleist ball development they look for him in the vids.
In one of my forum posts, I believe I've encouraged someone to pull the trigger.
While I do know we're in the very beginning of #917 #FAST I'd like to plan and be fitted for irons when the new release year.

Guys, don't miss the #917 fitting!
