Can anyone advise at what point a player would switch from AP2 to CB. I have been playing the 714 AP2's since they came out and am thinking of updating them. I just wondered what any CB players out there think.

    Hi Philip,

That's a great question and it all depends on what you want out of your irons. Have you had a chance to get fitted for the irons and/or do a comparison between the irons?

Is there a reason why you want to switch from the AP2s to CBs? They are both considered "player" clubs and a lot of pros, top amateurs and even regular golfers play the AP2s because it offers a great combination of forgiveness and distance. Do you want a complete set of CBs or have you thought of a combo set?

Everyone will tell you to get properly fitted and do a comparison and then look at how your misses are between the two iron heads.

Let us know what you go with and how you like it.

Hi Philip, .... I've played the AP2's for quite a while now and have my handicap index in the single digit range. Earlier this year, I went for a fitting of the 716 T-MBs and the 716 MBs. I plan on going to a full "combo set" of T-MBs in the long irons (2-5) and the MB's in the short irons (6-PW).

Will I mishit my MB's --- of course! But that should still be somewhat few and far between AND the loss in distance is not that bad either ... at least compared to what some golf club reviewers would have you believe.

Would I get more forgiveness out of a new set of AP2's? -- Most likely. Would I enjoy them as much as the T-MB/MB combo set? I doubt it. I think it is the same for you or any golfer that is contemplating a "step up" in clubs. I use parenthesis on the "step up" because there is so very little difference between all of these clubs and the main difference comes down to individual preference!

The same could be said for cars -- a Chevrolet or Honda sedan would do well, but why do "we" ogle and think about the Porsche, Mercedes, etc? It all comes down to personal preference.

So at the end of the day Philip, I agree with what Samuel said -- go to a full on fitting -- try the various clubs and different shaft combinations out and go with what you like -- so long as you make an informed decision. If you enjoy your clubs - you will go out and play more and probably put the time in to be a better player too!

I had played the 712 CBs for a couple seasons, and upgraded to the 716 CBs at the end of last year after testing out both the AP2 and CBs. My numbers were all fairly similar between the two sets, so it pretty much came down to preference and feel for me. In that regard, the thinner top line, and overall buttery feel of the entire set of CBs I had to go with those. Having a full season in with them now, I definitely felt I made the right choice.

I have played the 712 ap2's, the 714 ap2's, and the 716 ap2's. Just recently switched to the 716 CB's! Best decision I ever made. These club are amazing. You will not be disappointed! I am hitting them better than I hit the ap2's. In my opinion if you can hit the ap2's you can hit the CB's because the CB's are that good and just as forgiving as the ap2's.

My understanding is that the 716 cb is as forgiving as the 714 ap2. (I heard they did this by using unicorn tears to quench the forging, but some people say it's the tungsten in the heel & toe) ...seriously it comes down to what you want to look at. I find the cb fits my eye perfectly. My opinion- If you can hit ap2 you can hit cb. I'm a guy coming from 690.cb's who hits every titleist generation that comes out, and the 716cb finally got me to switch. Either way you can't go wrong.

I've played both sets, and I prefer the CBs to the AP2s. The feel, the workability and the look at address are (IMO) much better with the CBs. I feel they are every but as forgiving on mishits as the AP2s.

Hey Philip -- glad to hear it. I think many of us would like to hear how you made out with the fitting and what clubs you decided to order! Always an exciting time!
