  1. My son is interested in the 915 driver. He is 32 and has a club speed of approximately 120 mph. Should he get the D2 or D3? I recommended that he get the Fujikura stiff shaft.

There are a lot more factors than just club head speed that come into play when choosing club head & shaft. Best advice is to have your son work with a fitter to get the correct club configuration for his swing. At this point in time the 915s may be getting scarce, especially if you are custom ordering. It might be worthwhile to look at the 917 instead.

I would recommend that he go see a certified fitter and get a proper fitting. They will ensure that he has the correct combination. There are a lot of variables in purchasing driver. Do it right the first time. With respect. Chuck......

If he has a swing speed of 120, I would absolutely recommend he get fitted by a professional. Don't walk, run to a professional to get fitted.

    Hi Ken,
I would tell your son to go for 917, but best thing to do is go to any good shop with full fitting service and try both out. I tried both options when getting 913 and went for the D2 as it went straighter than the D3. I've tried 917 and there on my Christmas list.

Two suggestions: 1. He might want to consider the 917, since it is the newest model. 2. Highly recommend that he go through a fitting session with a certified Titleist club fitter. His mind needs to be clear that he has the right driver. And have fun.

Probably not the answer your looking for, but, it's really an impossible question to answer. There are so many factors that come into deciding the right model driver head, loft, and then to decide on a shaft as well with only using a club head speed, it would just be a guess at best and that's all it'd be.

Factors like swing speed, launch angle, spin, are just the basic things to think about, plus many other factors, and that's just the head and loft consideration. Then after all those factors it then gets narrowed down to finding the right shaft profile, weight, length, tipping, ect.

Like many other people will say, really the best thing to do is go to a reputable fitter, with a good launch monitor. Fujikura, just like many other shaft manufacturers make great shafts, but it's narrowing it down to the right one with the head and loft combo that will give him the best, repeatable results.

Again, not the answer your probably after, but the most realistic answer to your question.

Speed alone is not the sole determinant for head or shaft. D3 does offer a lower spin but has a smaller face so dispersion may be an issue with a less forgiving face. The shaft has multiple determinants - transition loading and release for 2. Finding the best shaft from the multiples available really requires a qualified fitter with electronic equipment and hitting outdoors to see flight pattern. Unless the cost is an issue, I'd really suggest a fitting with a 917 D2 or D3.

Hi Ken, Sight unseen, it would be difficult to tell you what shaft he should play or even what head would work best. You don't say where he lives, but if his club head speed is 120 and his ball speed approaches 180, we would definitely recommend that he see a good fitter in his area to help him make this choice.
