I hit the 917 D3 at a demo day. It had the standard 12g weight in back. I tried it with the 8g weight and got my spin to come down a little. It got me thinking, what if you took the weight out of the back completely. Would it move the weight of the club further forward, and in turn make the spin lower? Or would it make the head too light and it turn lose stability.

Hi Luke, The balance of weight in the CG weights is such that it does not significantly effect anything other than the swingweight. Any secondary effects of speed, spin, centeredness of contact is more than likely the result of the lighter swingweight. We do encourage all players being fit to try different swingweights to see if there are any changes to performance such as you experienced.
Taking out the weight completely would render the head illegal by USGA rules as you cannot have a hole open to the inside. When the weight is in the head, the opening (to see whether you have a neutral, fade or draw weight) is effectively covered.

Thank you Cathi. That was the next question, if it made the club non conforming.
