  1. What should I buy next? 917 D2 Driver or 3 vokey wedges? I currently have 4-pw ap1 716 irons and an older Scotty Cameron Newport 2 putter from 2011. I also have Titleist lightweight stand bag (see attached photo).

Do you have an old driver or 3w that's reliable or pretty reliable? If you do, I would get wedges and compliment the set to score.

Me personally, I would get the wedges anyway and just take the 4 iron off the tee and play longer irons for approach shots which is totally manageable. When I got my last new set I had to return my driver. I didn't put an old driver back in the bag and just used my 915 F 16° and was fine. A few times I took the 3w out also and just used my 816 H1 19° and the same with my 816 H1 23°. Same course and scores were all within +/-5 of my index. I found it made me focus a lot more because I "had" to hit good shots off the tee. If I hit a bad shot off the tee I had more pressure to hit a good second shot. If I didn't have my wedges I know my scores would have been much higher over my index on average. It helped me focus and be more mentally sound from tee to green. Hope something of this helps.
  3. Buy the wedges! I have to SM5 wedges and I love them. Once I started using them, I already lowered my scores significantly! They are also great to use with tough bunker shots. I always had a problem with bunker shots with my old Cleveland wedge set, but now it's a piece of cake! You know it's all about the short game that saves strokes and wins matches!

I guess it's really all up to you. out of what you want to buy, what's currently working for you? i'd say go to your local shop and test the 917 and vokeys. good luck.
  6. Most definitely get the wedges.
  7. Looking good!! my Instructor told me not to focus on my driver so much and get my short game working again. his reasoning was"You hit a driver 13 times a round and your wedges are more critical to lowering your score." That said there is nothing like hitting the snot out of the ball! So I say get both! whatever you decide get fitted it is the most important part.

If you aren't gaming a driver at the moment I'd go with driver. Otherwise, the wedges would give you more versatility.
  9. Wedges are the most important clubs in my bag so I would go with new wedges!

I would go with the wedges (after seeing a fitter of course!). Getting solid scoring clubs that you are confident in is the quickest way to lower scores. For years I was obsessed with distance with my driver. No matter what I had, distance has been the same. After some reflection I stopped focusing on how far I drive the ball, and worried about hitting more fairways. I then started spending the majority of my practice time on inside 120 yards. my long game was not going to change drastically as my swing has been the same for about 20 years. I can only get more consistent in my ballstriking. However, adding 3 SM6's and really developing various shots with them has dropped my avg round by about 5 strokes as my proximity to the hole is much less and the number of 1 putts has increased. Hope this helps! Good luck!
