Struggle with drivers

  1. Apologies for the silly question but I sometimes struggle to keep my ball in play with my driver. Is it worth keeping it in my bag or would it be better to go 3 wood and hybrid. Yes I had lessons but it seems that my swing can be quite inconsistent. Problem is I like the look of the 917 driver.

That's not a silly question. It really depends on how you are playing, the type of course and your confidence level. I recently played and I was snap hooking my driver for the first 2-3 times I needed driver, so I essentially didn't use it again and used my 3-wood for tee shots. Yes I lost some distance, but I was in the fairway not in some unplayable area.

I would try and round or two without a driver and see how it goes. But I would say there would be times you might need a driver, if the hole is pretty long and you need that extra distance.

What do you feel you are doing differently with your driver compared to your other clubs?

  3. I seem to swing out to in when using my woods, but I am currently trying to change my swing path and this seems to be working quicker for my irons.

That's a problem that plaques us all at times. I find that I hit my driver the best if I swing a bit easier than I do with the 3-wood and be sure to follow through. My mistake is swinging hard at the ball.

I always thought it to be the hardest club in my bag to hit (the driver). I would keep it in there and practice. Every year I start to slice and hit not so long drives and with perseverance and patience they straighter and longer as the season progresses. When you hit the 250 plus shot down the middle it is a indescribable feeling...worth the struggles you may feel for now.

On the recommendation of my titleist fitter I went to a strong three wood(titleist 917) and it's a lot more fun playing from the fairway than everywhere else I know a lot of arguments both ways but I as I'm sure you do enjoy golf very much so a little distance loss for me is ok .

Don't blame you for going to a 3-wood. It just isn't fun badly missing the fairway almost every-single-time.

Agree with the comments. The driver has the flattest face and the longest shaft in the bag - a tough combination! Keep working at it and try the following:

Have you been fit? This will lock in your ideal settings - plus will give you confidence to know it's locked in for you

Maybe shorten the shaft? This will help you hit the center of the face more

The new 917 3W is amazing and will reduce your spin, give you some more distance. I was incredibly impressed and just replaced my 915 (which I swore I wouldn't do) but the 917 numbers were amazing.

Good luck - keep us posted!!

I would locate an experienced fitter and tell them you want to try a 44" driver length (1" longer than your 3 wood) & would probably want a little more lofted head. They can install the heavy black weight in the Titleist head to get the feel back. You may also notice an increase in ball speed with shorter club, starting to see more shorter length drivers by the best players in the world.

Do you spray your other clubs AL over? If the driver is the only one then I would think you would benafett from a club fitting from a certified fitter. If you spray all the clubs then it would seem you need to keep working on your swing.

I feel for you because it is something that has hurt me for years. The short term solution is to go down to a 3 wood or even lower. But I feel a visit to a PGA professional to help groove your swing. The driver is the hardest club to hit for me and so you might have a swing fault that the instructor should be able to spot quickly. The time is worth it. It was for me.

I had a "woodless" bag for years . In the past 4 years I finally started hitting it good with a driver. Don't give up and be patient.

When you are on the tee, there should be no doubts about the club you are using.
Confidence in your swing and the result are what matters most.
If you have doubts about your driver, bench it for the 3 wood for a while. When you are happy with the swing, try going back to the driver.

I agree with Matt B , I am not tall so using the standard lenght driver was hurting me off the tee, and playing with a 3 wd off the tee keeps you in play but I wanted to use the driver, cut it down to 43.5 and it made all the different,,, can control it better and getting 250-260 off the tee that my 3 wd would not give me, its worth a try!!!
