  1. I have been playing with a set of 714 ap1 steel 95, which are my friends set. I like them and want to buy a new set 716 ap1. I am a newer to the game and have a 16 handicap, 64, and improving. Should I buy the set with graphite shafts. My swing speed with driver was tested on trackman at 87, if that helps. I have been a weightlifter all my life and played football, so I have flexibility issues and will tend to over swing at times but I'm working on all that. Any suggestions? I'm going to buy this week.

By the time I replied to this I am sure the replies will sound like, get fitted. And I agree.

Graphite or steel won't change your game. A shaft too light may contribute to your over-swing. But graphite and steel now have weights that overlap. BTW, Titleist offers dozens of shafts in graphite and steel for irons that are custom order but not an extra charge. Now I'll start the pitch to find a pro shop or somewhere where the fitter can best fit YOU outdoors for the best weight, flex, kick point, and feel for your swing. The last thing you want to do with a Titleist golf club is buy it off the rack. There is no surcharge by Titleist to custom make a set of any combination of clubs.

    Charlie,
I just put a new set of 716 AP1 irons with Kuro Kage 63 gram graphite shafts in play a couple of weeks ago. They replaced my 714 AP1s with XP95 shafts that I used for 3 years. I find the main difference between the two shafts is feel. The Kuro Kage being 32 grams lighter is a lot easier to swing and yet it still has great head feel. I think more than the XP95. This is great for someone 79 years old. There is one thing a fitter cannot tell you and that is how the club feels to you. If you get graphite you will want to consider the torque rating. Normally, the heavier the shaft the lower the torque rating. Of course the different shaft weights change the feel. Torque in steel isn't usually a consideration.
  5. Thanks for the advise and comments.
I was fitted yesterday at local golf shop and bought the 716 AP1 graphite.
They felt great on the Trackman, and I am taking them to the range today.
They were longer than the 714 Ap1 steel as I hit both on the computer.

    Thanks
    C
