Currently reviewing the Titleist Custom Options Guide for driver/fairway shafts for a new 917 driver I intend to purchase during the next several weeks. I am 67 years old and play to an 8 handicap from the white tees. I am looking for a regular flex shaft with a mid launch. Can someone please explain what the "Torque" numbers mean. Thanks.

There are several good choices in that range. Based on my results, I'd suggest you really need a fitting. I went into the fitting thinking mid-launch in R flex is what I needed. I ended up with a different shaft that I've never used, in Stiff. You would never think that a low 80's driver speed would need a Stiff, but it cured a dispersion pattern. I compare the 917's to a Ferrari. You really need a good mechanic/fitter to get optimum performance. You need to take it out to the track(man) to see how it really can perform.

It refers to how much the shaft will twist when the ball is hit. The lower the number the less twist in the shaft.

    Doug,

As you swing the club the head rotates. The shafts resistance to rotation is its torque rating. Lower torque more resistance, higher torque less resistance. Some club builders and fitters believe that proper torque is just as important as flex in graphite shafts.
