I've been struggling a bit lately with my 3 wood off the fairway so I was thinking of changing it for a strong Hybrid. I would be interested what your thoughts are.

I recently got fitted for a 17 degree hybrid I still do not hit it as far as my 3 wood so I need both. I think it more or less your person opinion and what you hit better, you might have an easier time hitting the hybrid but you might lose some overall distance when I got fitted for the hybrid my average carry with the hybrid was 262 off the deck but my 3 wood off the deck was 274 and I didn't want to give up that yardage of my 3 wood, but I already play a 2 degree strong cb 2 iron so I can swap with out taking other clubs, so if you had a extra club figure out do you want give something up for something else. If I had a hard time with getting a 3 wood up in the air off the deck I would go to a fitter and see if you 3 wood fits you first of all and there nothing wrong with swapping some of the long irons you currently have in the bag out for hybrids.

If it's a 910-917 F, you can adjust it from 15 to 16.5 degrees. Choking down 1/2 inch will help with better contact. After that, see a fitter for the option that works best for you between woods and hybrids. You might even work better with just a new shaft. If your current is not a 917, you might be surprised with a 917 F.

Cannot say that I hit my 15 fairway in the 260-270 range but going on 72, I too had issues with mine and decided to put it away. Had a 17* 816 hybrid in my bag and decided to try it instead of my fairway. Dropped the loft to 16* and lost maybe 10 yards in comparison, but the accuracy and consistency improved measurably. Distance, is that not what we want, well I will take the accuracy and consistency, in the middle, in the short grass all day. Most do not hit the 3 wood off the deck that accurately to begin with. Now that I play from the senior tees, I good with my numbers and I will dream of hitting my driver those distances. Maybe in a tournament this summer, with the new AVX might reach that distance +, again on a hot day with dry fairways again. Oh to be young again. Cheers...............
  5. Exactly as steele b writes. Little chance that you would have the same distance with hybrid as with 3w. And I dare to say that 17deg hybrid is not much easier club to hit as a 3 wood... (steele b is apparently low single digit with long shots..., normally the gap would be bigger). I think better idea is to shorten the shaft of the 3w a bit and maybe add a bit of loft. Make it a 4 wood, and I dare to say you still will be longer than a hybrid...
This is a frequent misconception. For many people, the hybrid are easier to hit and replace long irons. But typically we speak about 20+ deg clubs, maybe 19 deg. A 17deg hybrid requires also plenty of swing speed to hit well...

I'm having the same issue at the moment. I carry a 3 and 5 wood then 22* hybrid and am considering switching out the 5 wood for a hybrid and potentially the 3 wood as well, just depends on what sort of distance I can get out of a hybrid but would happily lose a bit of distance if it means I can take on par 5's in 2 without having to worry how I'm going to hit my wood off the deck!
