Hi, When setting up the clubs to carry in your bag these days it is not all that easy to work out what you should leave out or include on any particular day depending on the likely wind or course that you are playing. I see from earlier discussions that most people seem to include all of their wedges and higher lofted clubs and tend to leave out their 3 iron and 4 iron.

If you are one of those people who leave these out of the bag then what club do you use to play a low flying/running draw/hook/slice to get you out of the trees and still be able to get near the green which might be anything from 110M to 170M away.

I always carry my 4 iron (716 CB) which I can use successfully for shots like this as it doesn't get up in the air quite as quickly. On most days I leave out my 3 iron and 5 iron and sometimes even my 6 iron but I have to carry a club that I can hit low and work around the trees.

I would be very interested to see what other people use in this situation as I think if I left out my trusted 4 iron I would be stuck in the trees forever.

    Cheers Warren

Warren you got a good point. I play a tree lined course so I know what your talking about. I used to carry a 2 iron, currently I have a 3 iron in my bag for such shots.

When I upgrade my clubs, I plan on switching out some of my long irons for hybrids, so I guess i'll have to practice on the range and learn how to flight them up and down. Else I'll have to learn how to hit a hooded 6 iron or maybe just maybe learn how to not hit in the woods. :)

Agree Warren, everyone is a bit different and so you need to go with what you feel comfortable with, even if it's different from most. I personally find my 24 degree hybrid to be much more versatile than my long irons and have been able to hit low punch shots as well as high lofted longer shots. Definitely took some range time to develop those shots. If you don't have those shots with your hybrid, stick to your plan of carrying one long iron unless you play a course that is more links style and wide open.

I also carry a 4 iron. The hybrid gets up in the air too quickly and I can't knock it down.

Hey Warren, this sort of stuff always comes up whenever I'm playing a shorter or a longer course than I would normally play.

In an example of playing a shorter course(s), I tend to leave the longer irons and adding on an extra wedge(s). In the case where I might need a low flying shaped shot, sometimes the 6i is enough to address the ball closer to the back/trailing foot or sometimes as far back as I can use a 6i's usable loft. I am turning the 6i so delofted that it mimics a 3i loft. Although it will not go as far as 3i, but it is possible to make the ball act like it was played with a 3i.

Without being disrespectful, I do my very best to avoid the trees by not overswinging my driver driver. We have lots of pines and live oaks on the course I regularly play. When that occasion does arrive, I just take a soft hooded five iron to keep it low and drawing left. If I have to fade it, I am in trouble. I hit to a comfortable spot and try to either chip it or pitch hopefully to a makeable putt distance. Five iron is the longest iron in my bag. At my age (72) I play more to distances and hope to manage my game better from the senior tees. As Jack says, enjoy the game more.
