I currently play the first set of AP2's and absolutely love them.  I have owned them since their release and wouldn't consider playing any iron other than Titleist.  Just curious if anyone has played both sets and what are their thoughts about the two different sets.  Any advantages or disadvantages I should be aware of?  My set is 4-PW with Project X 5.5's in them.  Only reason I am considering an upgrade is because mine are getting kind of rough.  Any info is appreciated.

    Steve,

There is hardly any difference in the old/new AP2's.  They reduced the bounce a little on the short irons and added the extra elastomer on the back of the club to reduce vibration.  If you like your current AP2's and are not making any significant changes in shaft preference, stick your your old set!

I switched to the new AP2's with the Dynamic gold S300 shafts last year from 962 DCI's.  I tried the 2009 square groove version as both were available, and saw no appreciable difference in performance so I purchased the 2010 version.  I can't say they are better, but I can say they are an amazing club for a reasonably good player.  I am a 6 handicap that just took up the game again after a few years off, I was mostly concerned with spin, but the spin with the v grooves is sufficient enough that I can back up a 6 iron from 180, and I if I am not careful my short irons spin right off the green.  Years ago I played Staff fluid feels and Balata balls, this 2010 AP2, with the ProV1, is way better, so they found a way to improve the new v grooves over the forged sticks in the 80's

  4. Steve, my 2009 AP2 irons were worn and I now play the AP2 710. The 710 does have a little less bounce, thinner topline, and better feel...a bit more traditional looking club. I agree the difference in the two doesn't warrent switching [cost] unless it is time to replace your set.

    Thanks for the advice guys,

My current set is getting pretty worn out but I probably have another season left in them.  I am considering a total fitting late Spring and will evaluate after that.  Thanks again.

The newer shaft upgrades will help in the decision to upgrade.

    T.,

I agree, I didn't get fit for my current set but the shafts seem to be a good fit.  I want to get a full fitting in the spring after I get some practice in and get the swing grooved after this nasty winter.   I am definitely upgrading to the new fairways and hybrids and will do an iron fitting as well to determine if I want to upgrade the irons.   Thanks for the advice guys!!

Steve, the feel is pretty consistent between the two versions, maybe a bit softer with the new ones.  The PX 5.5's make a big difference as I had those with my originals and switched back to the Dynamic Gold S300's with the 710's.  I like the combo of the S300's better with the new 710's than what you have (I had) better.

To all, I'm trying to find out how Titleist defines standard lie. i.e., I have heard that compared to other manufacturer brands, Titleist creates these irons as 1 or 2* flat.  I don't see that in the specs when comparing to some others.  Any truth to that??

  9. Frank, I have noticed lie angles differ when comparing OEM's, but don't think these are standard flat. Get fitted...hit shots to see ball flight. Simple for me...at address I like to fit a dime just under the toe of the club at address. That left me ordering my 710"s 2* flat...I don't like left.

Thanks Eddie, I will go ahead and get them fitted but will try the dime thing at home and see how they compare to your little trick.

    Eddie,

Great tip, I am curious about mine now.  I need to get them checked anyway but the dime trick makes sense.  Thanks for sharing.
