I just purchased a used set of AP1 710 irons (4-GW, serial # 1727804) from Golf Smith.  Prior to buying the clubs I noticed that the numbers on the sole of the club (4-P) along with the “710” located on the hosel are white in color while on the gap wedge (W) and “710” located on the hosel is black.  I asked the store employee why there were white and why they didn’t match the set on the display shelf.  He was not able to answer why there was a difference but assured me that my clubs be authentic when I asked him there was a chance that they were counterfeit.

The clubs were also missing the shaft bands on all the irons.

Just wondering if anyone else has a set of AP1 710 irons with white numbers on the soles of the clubs?

We looked at your picture and sight unseen,  it looks like the set was repainted by someone in white and the gap wedge was added later.

    Thanks for your opinion Cathi,

On final question is other than the serial #, are there any areas on the golf club that you can recommend to look at to verify authenticity?  Is there any marking under the grips that I should look for or common “defects” in counterfeit clubs that I should be aware of?

     Thanks,

     Jake

You can take your club and compare it side by side with a new authentic set at a local pro shop.  Some of the copies are very good and would be difficult to tell until it fell apart.
