Just a few short weeks after my nephew and I witnessed a hole-in-one at number 14, we pulled up to the tee and noticed the pin was in the same position. "Wouldn't it be funny?" we said to each other.

Sure enough, I get up to hit and thin my tee shot off to the right. Darn! Well, at least I cleared the water. But wait, the ball hits the sloped green and slowly catches a ridge, then trickles down towards the pin, so I'm thinking "maybe my bad shot might just work out okay", and as we're watching it slowly trickle, closer and closer to the flagstick, it gently disappears into the side of the cup!

I was in complete shock. I've hit some really great iron shots over the years, but I never imagined my first "hole-in-one" would come on a lousy thinned 8 iron blocked out to the right. Go figure.

Needless to say, we finished our round, snuck into the clubhouse as the Wednesday men's league was gathering, and quietly savored a shot of Makers Mark to celebrate before hightailing it out of there with my 401k intact!

As they say, "Thin it to win it!"
