The only hole in one I ever had was on a sand green par 3 at the Ikoyi Club in Lagos, Nigeria in 1966 or 1967 with a 7 iron. These greens, or more correctly browns, were common in tropical areas where fine closely mown grasses were impossible. The sand was oiled and compacted, and when your group left the brown you smoothed the surface by dragging a wide oiled canvas attached to a horizontal rod across it. There was a professional tour event held at this course and I remember Ian Woosnam played.
