On Father's Day, June 19, 2022, my 13 year-old son and I were playing are typical Sunday round. What was abnormal was the fact that we had just driven home the night before from a baseball tournament. After a long drive, I was content to sleep in and play later in the day. But, my son encouraged me to keep our early tee time - was I ever glad we did.
Hole 5 on our course was playing 188 yards. My son teed off first, and landed a bit short of the green. I hit 6 iron to the center of the green where it caught a ridge, and the ball disappeared toward the pin. I immediately told my son that was going to be close, as I hoped I would have a 5-footer for birdie.
My son chipped on the green and as we approached we only saw his ball.
I immediately assumed my ball had rolled through the green and began my search in the long rough just to the back of the hole. After not finding a ball, my son suggested we check the cup.
Sure enough, my Titleist 1 AVX ball was in the cup!
I have been playing golf, since I was 8. Although I have hit the flagstick before on par 3s and been within tap in range, this was my first hole-in-one.
To achieve this on Father's Day, while playing with my son - as my Dad had always played with me - was a surreal experience.
