It didn’t take long after my first-ever HiO for lightning to strike again — and to my utter delight, it happened this month. Two holes-in-one after a 42-year drought. Apparently, I was just warming up.
This one went down on a cold, foggy morning in Chino Hills, California, at Los Serranos Golf Club, where we were playing the PGA qualifying twin courses. We tackled the South Course, the longer and grumpier of the two. The fog was thick, the air was heavy, and we were the second group out, squinting into the mist like explorers.
I won’t sugarcoat it — the front nine was ugly. Very ugly. But I gave myself a pep talk at the turn and started behaving on the back nine with a couple of pars. Then we arrived at hole 12.
Par 3.
166 yards on the cart GPS.
Playing long all day.
I usually hit a 6-iron here, but wisdom (or divine intervention) told me to club up. I’d recently swapped my 5-iron for a 24-degree hybrid, and wow… excellent life choice.
I lined up my Titleist Pro V1 #3 using my trusty crossline alignment, took the swing, and heard that beautiful “goof” sound — you know, the one that tells you you’ve done something right. The shot came off pure, drifting gently right to left, landed just short of the green, and started rolling.
Then… fog.
The ball disappeared into the mist, and we all stood there guessing. Suddenly my group erupted, catching the attention of the guys ahead. One of them walked back from the tee box to investigate. With every step he took closer to the hole, my heart rate climbed.
Then came the thumbs up.
“In!”
Absolute chaos. Butterflies. High fives. Pure disbelief.
Two consecutive months with a hole-in-one? Statistically ridiculous. Emotionally fantastic. Add in winning all the friendly wagers plus a $100 sponsored prize from one of our golf mates, and suddenly lunch — and unlimited sake — tasted even better.
Another miracle in the books.
When it rains… it really pours.
