The cooler weather and nursing a back sprain has left me watching lots of video on golf. One noted instructor says that there is at least 4 more yards in every golfer. You need to swing faster. Another PGA player says he only swings about 80%. For me if I try to swing 100% the chances of keeping a ball in the fairway or hit a green is slim to none vs. a 80% swing. We all want to hit the ball further but where do you give up control over distance ?

I watch tons of golf while doing a myriad of other things of some are golf related. I feel like I am forever holding a club while watching tv or working on my stance, setup, and posture in a 30 second golf swing. The good...I swing with no fear and must go near or at 100%. It is just a driving range with really nice trees with a hole and a flag. We're just playing fetch with ourselves. The bad...is when I swing tentatively thinking I need to dial it back. Or even swinging because I am weary of a certain hazard. Forget about it! I refuse to do this anymore and now have a mental coach which I plan to take to the range and on course to help with focus. The ugly...is knowing you didn't give it your all because of fear of something. I say swing away, goal to keep it in play, hit your second as you know you will be sure to play again another day. #AgressiveGolf

Good topic on swing speed..    Of course I would love to hit the ball far but I've come to realize I don't have that ability..   I'm 40 years old and not getting any younger so going forward I've been trying to swing nice and easy and just keep it in play..  If i have to hit a 7 iron when I'm only a 140 yards out, so be it...  At the end of the day what matters to me the most is the score..  So I'm all about control..  Keep it in play + Fun = good score

I've tried swinging outta my a***** plenty of times and it got me no where...  Not worth it and you could risk injuries swinging like an idiot..

Talking about swing speed and IMO, EE and FC have the smoothest swings I've ever seen.  I had the chance to see EE this year in Boston and stood behind him on one of the tee boxes...  He got up, waggled and swung that club with ease..  It was almost slow motion that's how smooth it was..

Hope you get better soon Carl..  Back pains are the worse, I feel for you.

    Carl,

The issue most struggle with....when I try to "swing for the fences" my timing goes out the window, so I've learned to stay in control.  My control shots are typically on par 3s and holes with tight fairways or lots of trouble waiting to happen (bunkers, hazards, etc...).  On a hole with a wide fairway and no waiting trouble, I will put a little more on my tee shot if I need to in order to get to a specific yardage for my approach shot.  Otherwise, swing normally

Take care of your back and hopefully you'll be back on the course soon.

I can't swing like I used to due to an accident.  That said, I've had to rebuild my swing from the ground up.  I was never long, but I have regained most of my distance off the tee.  Irons are still a work in progress.  The best advice I can give is to pay attention to your set-up and club face.  Control is far better than uncontrolled distance.  Keep working at it and have fun.  Your back and other body parts will thank you!

Great topic Carl hope your back gets back to normal.

I  believe staying with in my tempo produces the best results for me.Trying to rip one just takes me totally out of my swing my timing gets all out of sync, and bad shots are the by product of this fault'When trying to swing out of my shoes, tension builds up and swing speed is lost.,and so is direction.

Accuracy and control is a whole lot better than trying to gain 2-4yrds and end up 20-30-yrds left or right.Being in the fairway is a whole lot better then OB or in the water/hazard or the forest with no second shot.

To wrap it up if you have a slow tempo keep it slow if you have a medium tempo keep it medium if you are quick/fast tempo get it fast.staying within your tempo to me seems to be the key.
