    Hey TT Crew!

My buddy and I are looking to take on the Robert T. Jones Trail down in Alabama this August.  We are looking for make this trip fun, but extremely affordable.  Have any of you done this before?

There's about 11 courses in total, and since we plan on making this a four day trip which includes traveling, we know we won't be able to play all the courses, but I've heard that there's a good way to travel and play some of the better ones over others.

Hotel recommendations are greatly appreciated as well.  I recently got married and my buddy is looking to propose soon so we have somewhat of a tight budget.

    All help is greatly appreciated!

    Jason,

We made the trip last spring, First two days We played Ross bridge and Oxmoor Valley which are about 1.5 miles apart in Birmingham. While there we stayed at Candle wood suites 3 miles from either course under 90$ a night double occ, many resturants near by. Third day we went 1 hour south to Montgomery and played Capitol Hill. Stayed at Holiday Inn Prattville south 0.9 miles from Capitol Hill course Less than 100$ a night. Fourth day traveled 1 hour east to Grand National at Auburn stayed at a holiday inn express capps landing only 6-7 miles away under 100$ a night. We are going back this year going to add a few more courses Cambrain and Hampton Cove. Hope this helps and hope you have as good of a time as we do when we go down there we are a group of 8 and its a yearly trip somewhere. Last two years been Alabama next year were going all the two Mobile that way we have hit them all. Hit'em straight and enjoy the sunshine.

Jason, I have never made this trip but it is on my bucket list. One thing I can tell you is that the temps and humidity in August will be high, so prepare for that. Since you plan on only 4 days including travel, research the courses you wish to play and ensure they are close enough to each other to get the most golf you can with the least amount of travel. Many of the courses on the trail have package deals which include hotels. Good luck and have a great time. Jim

Just saw Matt Ginella do his travel series on Golf Channel and he talked about the RTJ trail and his faves.  Google "Matt Ginella RTJ" and you will find several articles he has written on the trail.  Grand National is his personal favorite.  report back and let us know what path you took around !

Jason, From someone who lives on the Trail, you won't be disappointed in the quality of golf and the choices available. You can check out The Trail on their website which includes information on each site, distances between sites, and special offers: http://www.rtjgolf.com/ . All of the sites that you will want to play on your first trip are a minimum of 36 holes and the travel time between adjacent locations is 1-2 hours. Yes, it's humid in August, but you won't mind given the golf experience.

As the other TT members have stated....it will be hot and humid.  I would recommend going a bit further south after the trail and catch Kiva Dunes, Lost Key, Gulf Shores CC and maybe Penninsula.

That would allow you to catch some beach time as well.

Jason, I'm a platinum member of the trail.  Live in Ohio thru the summer and Alabama when it gets chilly in Ohio.

There are 11 locations and 26 championship courses.  I have over the past year played all 26 courses.  The trail is some high-quality public golf courses that are well managed and maintained.  The trails web site has a lot of information that you and your partners should go through.  The slide shows for each course has some excellent golf course photography.  Golf on the trail, considering the course quality, I feel is reasonably priced.

There are nine locations that were designed by Robert Trent Jones.  There is also two locations that were not designed by Jones but are resort courses that are part of the trail.  All eleven locations have first class ranges with training facilities.  Pro shops are well stocked.  Pro's and lessons available at all locations.  The jones designed locations also have what are called "Short Courses".  The short courses are incredible, not your average par 3 course, these have a full set of tee boxes each hole, plenty of bunkers, waste areas, and hazards.  I use the short courses to practice irons.  Give one a try during your trip.

The courses are spread across the state.  The web site home page has a driving distance and drive time chart that is real handy for planning a trip.  The web site also includes the local hotels and motels, the resort courses are expensive if you stay at the resort, but staying at a local motel is just as good if you're just there for the golf.  Additionally, as you start planning and have some dates picked out, go to the web site and check on course maintenance.  I wish all courses did as the trail does and publish their maintenance schedule.

On weekends, the courses do get crowded thru the warmer months.  Through the week, play is moderate.

I have found all of the courses challenging and a lot of fun to play.  Alabama has some excellent golfers, you'll surely make some new friends while here.  Some real good eats down here too.

My home course is at Magnolia Grove in Mobile, I'll be here thru the end of February.  If you're in the area let me know.  If you have questions about a course or location let me know here or by PM.

Come to think of it, something like this would make for an AWESOME TT event.....................................

    Anyone else agree?

  11. Huntsville is not worth the stop but the links course at grand national, the judge and senator at capital hill, and the shoals are great courses. if you could play four courses, those are the ones to go play. If you ever go back or have a longer period of time, play magnolia grove, it is the best on the trail.
