Okay, so I've run into a few situations on the course lately that have taken me out of my game a little. With all of the new "pace of play" talk it seems that play has become slower in my neck of the woods. Here are a couple of pet peeves of mine (LOL, please don't judge me!)......

    1) If your tee shot is consistently 200 yds or less, on 400+ yard holes odds are you don't need to wait for the green to clear to hit your 2nd shot.

    2) If your tee shot is consistently 200 yds or less, odds are the back tees aren't for you.

    3) I am all for growing the game but that being said, I don't think its appropriate to try and teach your toddler to play golf on the course during peak play times.

Again, these are just my pet peeves and opinions and I in no way want to offend anyone. Thanks for letting me vent!

Good ones Michael. My main pet peeve is people not repairing ball marks on greens. Only takes a couple seconds to repair and only a few seconds to learn how to properly fix them.

Yeah, speed of play is a problem mostly on crowded courses and on weekends. I played Whistling Straits last summer, no carts, no cart paths, the caddies are timed and responsible for keeping foursomes done in about four hours. Best solution I have seen.

Micheal, i'm with you on all 3.... There are no rules on these but it's common sense...

And i'm all for teaching the little ones how to play but yeah not during peak hours... When the time comes for me to bring my boys it'll be well after 5 or so and just to play a few holes.. During the day, we'll go to the range..

I think that these things are part of golf and we all do it and it's such a great game it definely doesn't make me wanna take time off but I can understand why that pissed u off. Sometimes it annoyes me to

    Ball marks.....YESSSSS......BALL MARKS!

Good one! I was taught a long time ago to walk the green to get a feel for the slope etc and to repair any ball marks that may have got overlooked. nothing like a bumpy green to ruin a good putting round.

I'd have to go with not repairing ball marks or raking bunkers. I also seem to be growing tired of the dropped club -follow thru. this one can now be seen on every televised golf program and 50% of the groups I get paired with. It's over dramatic and silly. Just hold onto the club...

Michael, I've learned (the very, very hard way), the only way to get change is to change yourself. It's not what others do, it's how you react to what is being done. Don't let others or outside influences influence your attitude. Take charge of the situations, no matter what they are. The only one who has power over how you feel and react is yourself. Stay positive!

Not repairing ball marks & not raking bunkers has become almost epidemic. Your list is spot on Micheal, people need to play the correct tees and children don't belong on a "big" course when they are just learning. If you want to get them out, then hit the driving range, a par 3 course or a short "executive". course if there is one near by.

Marshals that tell you that you're 'x' number of minutes that you're behind pace, but you have to wait on every shot.

I don't take issue with kids on the course. They're far less of an issue than a hacker who hits a provisional on every other shot or stares at the break for 5 minutes from 3 different angles when they're lying 7.

Seriously?? Children don't "belong" on a big course? That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I do and will continue to teach my kids how to play on whatever course I happen to be playing. But I guarantee they won't be holding anyone up.

Age and ability have nothing to do with slow play. It's knowing your limitations and how to keep up. A high handicapper lining up a 12 footer for double bogey from every angle is no worse than a single digit handicapper lining up a 12 footer for par from every angle. If you're not keeping the proper pace and you are holding up the group behind you, you need to learn to keep up. Just like high handicappers and beginners need to know when to just pick up and move on, single digit handicappers need to know when to pick up the pace and just hit the shot. A busy Saturday morning is not the time for a beginner to find out their "true" score, nor is it time for an advanced player to go for a personal best.

All good points. Definitely like the new tee it forward campaigns that are out there now. I drive the ball 280 on average and I like to play courses from the white tees at times when the rest of my group plays from the whites. Rarely do I get to play the back tees, since it will only be the times when I know others in my group can play within 4 hours just for the sake of courtesy. Hate it when groups play multiple tees and if they do they don't like to hustle to the forward tees and are ready to tee off when the people from the tips hit.

Actually my pet peeves are slightly different. We love playing a under 4 hour round. That means ready golf and getting set when one of us are ready to hit the ball. It's frustrating when players think that they are on tour and need absolute stillness in their peripheral vision area. We are just out here to enjoy the game and besides, if you have been inside the ropes walking with the pros you will see that the crowd is bopping and weaving all over the place.

On a clear course, or a 7:30 tee time, we play 18 in about 2:20. On Sunday afternoons, however, it seems 5 hours + is the 'norm'.

Most weekend guys DO play the wrong tees, and then take five minutes to read their 10-foot putt for double bogey from every angle!

I love when a foursome sprays tee shots all over the course, and then going to their balls together and playing second shots one-by-one, rather than dropping your buddy off at his ball with a couple of clubs and heading to -your- ball. Ready golf is a lost art, it seems.

And don't even get me -started- on cell phones on the course. Do you REALLY need to check facebook and twitter between every shot?

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who notices all of this!

Keith: A local course I play allowed multiple 5-stones on the weekend and the Marshall had the nerve to tell my dad and I, who waited 5 minutes or more on every shot, that we had fallen behind pace 5 minutes and that the guys in the pro shop had told him to come and tell us to speed up. The ensuing sentence from me to him was filled with several expletives and he left us alone the rest of the day.

PK: I'm in same boat when I play with my dad but I enjoy the challenge of the shorter tracts because it makes me think about my shots more and use more of the clubs in my bag to score well.

I hate following a foursome that waits to watch each person hit his/her shot. I feel like you get out, get your club and then let the other person drive over to their ball so that he/she is ready to hit their shot. Meet back in fairway and go. Ready golf, sub 4hrs.

    Ok...
    Ball marks..
    Sunflower seeds..
And the group behind you that constantly drives right behind your cart while you're on the tee. Back off or stay behind the corner!

Hey man, my pet peeve is older golfers discouraging kids and new players! I have been HS golf coach for 8 years. You would not believe the amount of older people complaining about the kids and what they do, how slow they are, how they dress, the list goes on and on.

If we don't have kids playing golf all we will have is grumpy guys keeping everyone away!

What peeves me off is listing to others making peeves while I'm trying to play the game with a relaxed, open mind.

Pet peeves are people not raking bunkers, fixing ball marks on greens, and not replacing divots. Leave the course better than you found it. When you fix your divot, fix one or two more while you're waiting to putt. When you rake the bunker, rake other parts of the bunker that need it, not just where you were. Also, I've noticed that the slow golfer never thinks he/she is the slow golfer. They just don't get it. They're the same person you wait behind in the grocery store, when they're all checked out and the clerk asks them for money, then they start looking for their wallet instead of being ready when the clerk asks. Same on the golf course. Be ready to hit your shot when its your turn. Don't wait until its your turn to start your "pre-shot" routine. Too many people watch golf on TV and think that's how you play. PLEASE understand, you're not playing for millions of dollars and you're probably not playing in twosomes. Remember why the pro's play in twosomes. Its because they are slow players.

Agree, Ball Marks!!!! People obviously playing off wrong tees. Love waiting on foursome that everyone goes to each shot and then moves on! Ready golf! Don't have a problem with kids, but noon on Saturday and letting 5 yr old hit 2-3 tee balls while groups stacking up behind? Plenty of time for kids, but parents, please use some discretion on when, late evening will make it a better time for the kids and they will enjoy it more.

Bunkers not raked, tracking sand from the bunker to the green because sand was not knocked from players shoes. Plumb bobbing for 5 minutes and my latest is loud music wailing out of a golf cart breaking up the tranquility of the golf course.
  23. GUYS, we can all improve the game with leading by example. I have tried it the other way and it never seems to work. Lets be better than that negativity and push a positive example. It can't hurt...
